Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Invincible

Invincible is the second book in The Chronicles of Nick, sequel to Infinity. The first thing I must say is, the title doesn’t match anything in the book. Even though the title isn’t very well thought out, it has a good plot. Though it may confuse you at some points in the book, I recommend rereading this book for a better understanding, it is interesting how he didn’t know anything about what was happening to him. Before I summarize Invincible to you I will give a brief summary of Infinity. Basically, Nick’s friend Maudug created a game and turned the football team into a pack of zombies. The zombies eat the principal and coach, from there it gets to crazy to explain. The book begins with the school replacing the principle and coach. The coach ends up being some immortal football coach, that made a deal with a stranger allowing the coach to win every championship game he got to, but he would have to kill the team afterwards. He gets Nick to steal personal items from the football players, so he can control them. Nick has two days to figure out what to do before the coach realizes what’s going on.

Kane Chronicles 01 Red Pyramid
by
Rick Riordan

The Red Pyramid By: Rick Riordan This is the first book of the new Kane book series by Rick Riordan. Just like the other books Rick Riordan has written they have to do with gods of a certain country. Sadie and Carter Kane have to save the world from Set, an Evil Egyptian god. It has action right from the beginning, when their dad is captured by Set after the Rosetta stone is blown into pieces. This book is full of suspense, they must go from England to New York to Egypt and then to Arizona in just five days. Even worse they have had no training until those five days. Every time you think they have a chance to take a break, something pops out of nowhere. Also, these characters are easy to relate with, except for the part where gods attack them, since they were normal kids before they came upon this incident. I recommend this book to anybody who liked the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and I also recommend and will read the next book. By: Benjamin Le
