Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Sunday Philosophy Club Isabel Dalhousie

There is a LOT of MEAT (substance) to this novel, and to the series of books that follow. This is not a FLUFF read. There is a lot of thought, conundrums, riddles, wranglings of the conscience by Isabel Dalhousie, the main character as she works her way through daily life in Edinburgh, Scotland. Beyond this exploration of Isabel's MIND, there is a cultural and GEOGRAPHICAL cornucopia of references to Edinburgh, specifically, and SCOTLAND in general which I find fascinating. If you like the British TV shows viewed in America, you will probably like this novel and the series. The references to Edinburgh are to specific streets, neighborhoods, museums, art galleries, concert halls and on and on so in a way, it is a travel guide to Edinburgh which may be a stumbling block to some readers. I find it a very pleasing way to learn about Scotland. Isabel in her musings and ramblings makes many references to Scottish poets, writers, painters, and in general to many PHILOSOPHERS as she has a part time job editing an academic journal on philosophy and ethics. Keep in mind that the author, McCall Smith, is besides an author, a professional bioethicist. So, ethical dimensions permeate the book. In my view, our world today can use a tutorial on integrating ethical considerations into our daily lives, and so, this is one gentle way of doing that."Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention."

Our future hinges on our capacity for critical thinking. We have no future, then, as the capacity for critical thinking diminishes daily.
