Unwind Dystology 01 Unwind

Unwind is a great suspenseful and gory novel for young adults. I've had many a student argue over who would be checking out the novel next. It brings up great topics for discussion: abortion, euthanasia, adoption, and many others. I was a little disappointed in the ending, but that isn't unusual when a book is so engaging. I haven't read the sequel, but it's on my list.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children

Ransom Riggs

What do you have when you have a class full of high school freshmen eager to hear what happens next? You have Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I've been teaching for 25 years, and for the first time in a long time, my students read ahead of their assignment. They were ARGUING over who got to check out the sequel, Hollow City. Miss Peregrine's has all that kids love--action, foul words, romance, comedy, and to top it off, awesome vintage photos. The kids were on the edge of their seats, anticipating the next thrilling part of the novel. I enjoyed it as well, and I recommend it for teachers who want to get their students engaged in a challenging novel with built-in excitement.

Bring Up the Bodies
by
Hilary Mantel

I knew how the story of Anne Boleyn ends, and yet, I turned pages in this book so fast that I finished it in a day. What an amazing author. Mantel can make the most familiar story into the most suspenseful story. Beautiful sentence structures, the gift of story-telling, and a spot-on eye for detail, Bring up the Bodies is one-of-a-kind.
