Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Magicians Book A Skeptics Adventures In Narnia
by
Miller
Melissa Ryan
, February 25, 2010
I remember feeling the betrayal that Laura Miller felt upon learning that Lewis's Chronicles were meant to mirror the story of Christianity...and I myself was raised a good Christian girl! Though I no longer consider myself a Christian, but a Universalist, the magic of Narnia still haunts me. Miller's book is highly addictive, very much like an intimate conversation...I could hardly put it down. I highly recommend it to any skeptic who has a love/hate relationship with the Chronicles.

God Delusion
by
Richard Dawkins
Melissa Ryan
, February 09, 2009
I teeter on the edge of Agnosticism and Atheism, and after reading Dawkin's manifesto, I nearly fell head first into the welcoming arms of Atheism. A 'recovering Christian', I found myself plopping my husband down to furiously read aloud especially frightening segments. He nodded and, being raised without any sort of religion, was not as shocked as I was. Some of the information in this book truly had my heart hammering in indignation! How I wish I had the gumption to send a copy to every Christian in my family!! (And there are plenty, let me tell you!) I fear Dawkin's strong voice will piss of too many believers to win any 'converts', but reading his work has definitely challenged me, prompting a quiet evolution that is slowly seeping out via my online and personal interactions. No longer the closeted doubter, thank you Richard Dawkins!

Garden Spells
by
Sarah Addison Allen
Melissa Ryan
, February 09, 2009
Though I typically favor non fiction, I needed a respite for my overly stimulated brain and found it in Allen's charming, warm novel. I was quickly pulled into this magical garden and it's keeper, readily identified with more than one character in the book and was quite sad to see it end so soon! Definitely movie material. These are the kind of people one hopes to have present in their lives ... authentic, deep feeling humans with a bit of magic thrown into the mix. A highly visual, easy read...a fun & colorful tale. The perfect antidote to the gloom & doom the evening News bombards us with day in and day out. Step into the garden, but watch out for that apple tree! It has a mind of its own...

Above All Be Kind Raising a Humane Child in Challenging Times
by
Zoe Weil
Melissa Ryan
, July 28, 2008
In a world that sometimes seems to have gone completely bonkers, a book such as this gem is near priceless. With a writing style that is highly readable & easily applied to child-rearing, Zoe Weil has given excellent advice on showing the children in our lives how to be peace, be love and thus positively change the world in the most simple of ways. I have been searching for such a book (without any religions undertones) for a couple of years. A fantastic helpmeet to this hip mama!
