This Is Where I Leave You

Jonathan Tropper

Hilarious, heartbreaking, poignant. Jonathan Tropper puts his finger on these seemingly tiny little things most people overlook. And those funny, awkward moments most people avert their eyes from? He wrote about them. And he did it well. It just occurred to me - he might be the John Cusack of authors. Or the Lena Dunham. Even though she's coming out with a book soon too. Anyway, this is my favorite Jonathan Tropper book. It's deliciously human.

Farm City The Education of an Urban Farmer

A punk-ish couple living in a poor and patchy neighborhood in Oakland. A vacant lot turned into a community garden and farm. A rabbit (dead) hanging from their shower rod and bees on the porch. And dumpster dives in China Town for the pigs. This is farm city. Lucky we get to read about. Lucky Novella is such an awesome person and writer. Not pretentious. Totally awesome.

A beautiful collection of essays about women and plants. This is a powerful book, ripe with different perspectives and essays true to the voice and experience of each woman author.

Starter For Ten

Um, hello, guys! This is a HILARIOUS book by the same guy who also wrote that other amazing book you all loved (One Day) that was made into an awful movie. The protagonist is likeable and pity-able and groan-at-able. He's an odd little duck, pretty brilliant, and getting into all kinds of trouble at college and in life. I am not talented at making things sound as good as they are, but if you enjoyed One Day, you'll enjoy this one. Less sap, more scruff, and more nerdery (word?). Read it! Then give it to your nerdy younger friend who aspires to be on Jeopardy (or 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire', I don't judge) but also loves beer pong and doesn't know quite where (or how) he fits in the world.

Twelve by Twelve

So a guy ends up living in this 12x12 house for a minute, and then writes a book about it. A beautiful book about living a soft, full life in this flat concrete world. 12x12 is full of contradictions, introspection, and inspiration. If you are a) questioning the American Dream, b) dreaming of off-grid living, or c) dreaming at all, pick up this book. A quiet and powerful read, you just might be moved.

Put 'em Up!

AWESOME canning book! I got this book mostly because I wanted detailed information about preserving techniques and processes. This book is both thorough and straight-forward in that respect. Clear illustrations accompany step-by-steps for water-bath canning, dehydrating, pickling, quick pickling, and so on. Another plus? This book is organized by produce, so if I am gifted a bag of oranges from my neighbors, I can flip to the citrus section and see what recipes are there. The recipes are very inventive and creative. The fennel onion jam was terrific! I really like the way the book is laid out and written. It's relaxed and encouraging. One more good thing about this book (last one, I promise) -- she explains how to treat each fruit or vegetable, i.e. how to cut fennel. It really is the little things. I LOVE this book!
