Berinfell Prophecies 02 Venom & Song

I recently finished Venom and Song, and while there were some things that I liked, I didn't think the book was very original or unique in the long term. Here we have another story with elves that have an ancient, flowery language (this one sounded like a prettier version of Latin), a bad-guy fortress located by a volcano that's spewing lava and molten rock, and a lot of the other familiar, fantasy cliches. But, there were a few things I thought were original and really popped out to me. However, I can't say any of them in detail, or it'll give away parts of the plot. (Smiles.) I can say this much, though: One thing had to do with an old secret that the young elves discover, with potentially dark implications that could alter everything as they know it. It was a very grabbing part of the story, and I'm not overstating that. This secret also leads to an interesting glimpse of how God reveals Himself to the different races of Allyra (the fantasy world of the book). Another part of the book I liked was when the elves discovered the Rainsong, but you'd have to read it to know what that part was about. And finally, the third part that I enjoyed... hmm... how do I say this without giving anything away? Well, let's just say it had to do with the leading antagonist of the story, and someone very... close... to him, and an intriguing transformation (I'll just call it that) that they both went through. All in all: Lovers of fantasy will enjoy this book for sure, but if you're a little tired of fantasy cliches, parts of it may feel tedious to you. If you've already read Book 1, Curse of the Spider King, and enjoyed it, then you won't want to miss the sequel, because it has even more exciting adventures and plot twists than the first one.

Berinfell Prophecies 01 Curse of the Spider King

When finally I got my hands on this book, it was worth the wait. Just like the previous books by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper, it was filled with adventure, action, suspense, and page-turning plots. Fans of Batson and Hopper will not be disappointed by the authors' latest release; they will love the new characters, settings, and creatures. It was quite interesting seeing the styles of both authors combined. The story had a unique twist; instead of humans from Earth traveling to another world, elves from another world travel to our planet, in search of seven unsuspecting thirteen-year-olds who hold the key to survival of the elven race. Evil forces are also on the hunt, in a race against time to kill the seven before the elves can reach them. In the beginning of the book, I thought it was a little slow (only compared to Batson's previous novels!), but it didn't take long before I was hooked. The characters, who are seventh graders, might be easier for middle schoolers to relate to; but readers of all ages who are fans of Wayne Thomas Batson, Christopher Hopper, or fantasy in general will love the book. I also liked how God and Christianity seemed to play a bigger part in this novel than in some of the authors' previous books. I especially recommend this book to librarians - as they are the heroes in this story! - and to people who say they don't like to read. Their opinion just may change after reading this!

Door Within 01

The Door Within is a Christian fantasy book, written in the allegorical style of The Chronicles of Narnia, but with a modern twist. Young Aidan Thomas, the main character, is about to enter high school when he discovers three mysterious scrolls in his basement. They beckon him to another world of knights, dragons, and war, and he finds himself wrapped up in a dangerous mission: to save the kingdom of Mithegard from the evil clutches of Paragory. The book is filled with action, mystery, and peril, and I found it impossible to put down. Christians will love the clear allegory and good Biblical messages, and any reader will enjoy the nail-biting, page-turning suspense that keeps you up late at night; waiting to find out what happens next. This was the first fantasy book I ever read, and after reading The Door Within I became a huge fan of the genre. I highly recommend this book!
