Such a beautiful book. The language, the arc of the story and the main characters are equally wonderful. This is one of those books that you think about long after you are finished reading. Gilbert artfully engages the reader in Alma's journey as she pursues her many passions.

A rare and wonderful work of fiction. The journey stays with you long after the book is finished. Young Michael's shipboard adventures from Ceylon to England continue to make me smile a year after reading this wonderful book. Although the young man's voyage comes comes to an end, I continue to wish for more reading experiences with this charming character.

Such a beautiful book with a lovely narrative, intricate symbols and a wonderful plot. The story leads to places you don't fully anticipate.
