Passage

I read this book because I heard an interview on Fresh Air with Cronin. Vampires are awesome, and his book sounded like a relatively fresh take on the genre. Cronin is a good pitchman. Had I listened 10 days earlier to a different NPR program that reviewed the book as "a multi-million dollar cluncker", I could've spent 800 pages rereading Deathly Hallows (a book that, if looked critically, disappointed a bit). What a dull book that moved at a brisk walk with an awkward gait. The story stumbles several places: characters going by birth names and nicknames, the book being essentially two stories told a hundred years apart, the dialogue, but where the story trips into cringe worthy (read: offensive) territory is with regards to gender and race. Young women are mostly silly/jealous and can't wait to be married with the exception of the young woman that is AWESOME. Or that's what the reader is suppose to think of her as she has ridiculous man skillz (killing jumpers, the Cronin-world word for vampires.) So there's that gender lameness and then there's arguably two Magical Negroes with a potential third later on in the series if I'm guessing the outcome correctly, and I think I am. It's not a capslock racefail, but it does roll the eyes.

Heroes of Olympus 01 The Lost Hero

Rick Riordan

What's awesome about the new series in the Camp Half-Blood series is the story. Riordan builds upon his already cool world, adding and twisting the mythos of Greek and Roman mythology. His world is refreshing and familiar. What sucks about the series is the dialog between the characters, who are mostly likable but say/think things that seem outside the characters age. Which would be no big deal if those characters were 8 instead of 15. It's hard to believe Riordan was ever a teacher. Or maybe he just had students who said boring things that he thought were hilarious and included mythed-out versions of them.
