Revival
by
Stephen King
Poethead
, November 29, 2014
Stephen King manages to keep you in his grip, no matter what the subject might be. The pastor, who is obsessed with secret lightning, after losing his wife, his son, and then his faith, might remind you a little of Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. Jamie Morton, the protagonist, is simply a youth who gets caught in the spell of the creepy, lightning-obsessed pastor. The book is set in Maine, and you will be taken, once again, to the area of Castle Rock, the fictitious beloved location of many of Stephen King's most successful novels. I recommend this book for an entertaining and thought-provoking read.

Paying Guests
by
Sarah Waters
Poethead
, October 11, 2014
I was a fan of Sarah Waters and her writing, after I had read her book The Little Stranger. It is her writing that grabs you. The story is set in the 1920's, and Sarah's Victorian, gothic tone oozes from every page. You will feel as though you are a paying guest, in the old Victorian home, peeking out from another room across the hall. The book becomes a thriller about mid-way through, and at that point, if the writing has not held you captive, the plot and its twists and turns will.

Endless Love
by
Scott Spencer
Poethead
, March 01, 2014
This book totally surprised me. I thought it was a story of teenage love, based primarily on the previews of the recent movie release, but I was wrong. I decided to read it, after I read reviews of the book and of Scott Spencer. I was intrigued, and thus, I gave it a try. I was delighted. It is the story of young love, but it is a love that reaches into adulthood, touches everyone around the two people involved, and leads to utter and total destruction. What remains? I hope you won't pass by the book, because you believe it is a sappy love story. It isn't. I am interested in reading more of Scott Spencer's work. His style keeps you involved in a world away from the chair in which you are sitting.

This Dark Road to Mercy
by
Wiley Cash
Poethead
, February 18, 2014
This story is nothing like the first tale by Cash, A Land More Kind Than Home, except that the author's style of writing is still right on. He keeps you turning page, after page, after page, until you are finished. This is a huge story told in only 230 pages. The story revolves around two young girls, their father, and his struggle to obtain custody of them (illegally) , after their mother has died. The problem is that he is a criminal, and he is being pursued by more than one man: another criminal and the concerned case worker of the two girls. Thrown into the plot is the true story of the rivalry between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs, when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were batting it out. I highly recommend this book by a talented author, whose style of writing will keep you reading.

Winter's Tale
by
Mark Helprin
Poethead
, February 09, 2014
Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin (not to be confused with A Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare) is my favorite book of all time, and I have read a lot of books. I have heard many others say the same. This story covers it all: time travel, the power of love, mythology, good versus evil. It is a large book, but don't let that deter you. You won't be able to put it down. When I finished the book, I hugged it; I loved it that much. I highly recommend this wonderful read.

Into a Desert Place A 3000 Mile Walk Around the Coast of Baja California
by
Graham Mackintosh

, December 16, 2013
This is one of my favorite books. I couldn't wait to open the book, each night, to continue my journey around the peninsula with Graham Macintosh and his burro. This is a fantastic read for anyone interested in adventure, determination, survival, along with the love, beauty, (and danger) of the desert.

I have been a fan of Mary Oliver and her work for many years, and I own every one of her books. I had the privilege of meeting her, just a few years ago, and it was like meeting a poem. This book doesn't disappoint. Mary only gets better. Rock on, Mary!

Wild
by
Cheryl Strayed
Poethead
, August 04, 2012
I was interested in reading this book, from the moment I saw the cover with its hiking boot, all well-worn and tattered. I love to hike and backpack, and I wanted to learn more about a woman alone on a backpacking adventure, a big backpacking adventure! Cheryl had never backpacked before, and she decides she will take on the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT), as her first backpacking excursion. She had recently lost her mother, and she was newly divorced. She needed to find her center and balance once again. You won't believe the obstacles she had to overcome on the way to herself. I highly recommend this book, if you are an avid hiker, backpacker, or you long to do these things. You will enjoy this book and Cheryl's style of writing.

Gift of Rain

This is a book that was overlooked by a lot of people. It is a tender story of love, conflict and deceit. The Gift of Rain tells a riveting and poignant tale about a young man caught in the tangle of wartime loyalties and deceits. It is a book that is beautifully written with wonderful prose. It's a great story, and is one of my favorites of 2010.
