Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Ad Hoc At Home
by

My boyfriend received this book as a gift, and once I cracked it open, it was difficult to resist the urge to claim it as my own. Each recipe is more delicious than the next, and the food photography is absolutely stunning. Not to mention, Ad Hoc is chock full of intuitive and brilliantly simple tips on how to be a better chef that we would never have thought of otherwise. The recipes are very simple, straightforward and doable--exactly what we look for in a cookbook.

Domino The Book of Decorating A Room By Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy
by
Deborah Needleman

Now that Domino magazine is no longer arriving in my mailbox each month--and now that there are fewer and fewer shelter mags to love--this book holds an extra special place on my bookshelf. Even though I've poured over every dreamy image and gorgeously styled home in this book many, many times, I still pick it up several times a year for inspiration. And every time I do, I discover something new, charming and ingenious to love. There is just something so appealing about getting a glimpse into how other people live--especially those who are just so stylish. But this book is definitely more than a home picture book. The editors of this book provide practical, room-to-room advice on how to decorate with an invaluable list of resources in the back of the book (though I'm more inclined to shop at thrift and secondhand shops). While I love new online shelter mags like Rue and Lonny, there is something to be said for being able to curl up in (an artfully made) bed and feel the pages between your fingers. Of course, I'm a home decor junkie. But I'd venture to say that even those who dabble in styling or casually think they'd like to improve the look of their place will find many doable and inspiring ideas here.

Jane Austen Ruined My Life
by
Beth Pattillo

As a Jane Austen devotee, I couldn't resist picking this up. It was a fun, light read, and I must admit, at times I was dabbing at my eyes reading this--a sweet surprise from a book that I assumed at the outset would just be another formulaic chick lit read. I was pleased that Beth Pattillo proved me wrong.

Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills
by
Raleigh Briggs

, January 03, 2011
This book is amazingly helpful for anyone looking to live more simply. Aside from its innate usefulness, Make Your Place absolutely oozes charm. Raleigh's handwritten text and sweet illustrations are simply stunning. The cover is so gorgeous that I can't bring myself to hide this book away on the shelf. I always have it on display somewhere in my house. Plus, Raleigh's recipes for tinctures, salves and all-natural cleaning products are easy to follow. Within days of picking up the book in-store at Powell's, I whipped up three of her cleaning product recipes and gave them as a DIY Mother's Day Gift. Needless to say, my mom adored them--so much so that she asked me to refill all of the bottles with Raleigh's concoctions again this year. As if I weren't already a steadfast member of the author's fan club after picking up Make Your Place, Raleigh in real life is just as sweet and charming as she seems in the book. When I emailed her with a question about the best bottling methods for the cleaning products she writes about, she responded promptly with some helpful ideas. I will be giving this book as a gift to friends and family for many, many years to come.

Room

Suspenseful, haunting and beautifully written. This book was emotionally exhausting in the best way imaginable. Room was the best Christmas gift I received this year. If it weren't for all of the holiday madness--parties, champagne, presents and such--I would have read all of it in one sitting.
