Pieces of Soap Essays

An author with an old fashioned moniker for an old fashioned habit:saving the pieces to make a restored usable whole. A brilliant title for a collection of essays which all originated from one source and are all of a piece in their way.

Photographing Fairies
by
Steve Szilagyi

Although most reviews of this book describe photographer Charles Castle's pursuit of the truth about the existence of fairies, they miss the point of the book, which is an elegiac essay on grief and loss. Castle loses his wife in a bizarre accident during their honeymoon, and spends the rest of his life obliquely seeking death so he can rejoin her. The premise, while dramatic and tragic, is not maudlin or preposterous, but poignant. Castle's pursuit of fairies is actually a quest for altered consiousness, by which means he seeks to mitigate the pain of his loss. The irony is that he puts himself at shocking risk during the war, but ultimately achieves his goal after a misunderstanding with another man who is deranged by jealousy. His decision following another death is provacative and disturbing. The movie based on this book clearly portrays Castle's pain, and his relentless pursuit to end his now solitary existence on earth. I wish Szilagi would write more.

Little Boy Lost

A beautifully written, painfully poignant book; a perspective of France after the war rarely seen. Made me wonder how close we all comet to denying our own best futures through spiritual cowardice - that natural state that we think will save us pain but instead stunts our growth.

Infinite Jest
by
David Foster Wallace

Wallace uses descriptive language that is uniquely wonderful. One paragraph has me laughing out loud then holding my breath in deep anxiety. This book reads like nonfiction, as the reader steps inside the minds of each character and it all becomes real.
