Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Masterful,I have been waiting a year for another Inspector Gamache mystery and was not disappointed. I couldn't put it down and then was so disappointed that it was over and I have another year to wait. Louise Penny has shown so much growth as a writer. If you like to follow a set of characters be sure to try this series, but read it in order if possible!

The Long Way Home: Chief Inspector Gamache 10

If you have not read the Canadian author Louise Penny you are missing a wonderful reading journey. Her Inspector Gamache series is superb. The latest mystery, A Long Way Home, came out if September. It didn't have the same kind excitement as the last two in the series, but I still couldn't put it down. The great character of Inspector Gamache is working even in retirement. Her character development is excellent and the mystery keeps you guessing until the end. This is a series that I would strongly recommend reading in order, not only do the mysteries build on each other but it allows the reader to watch the author develop as a writer. Beware once you start, you will want to read all of them!

This is a riveting story of race, courage, and the struggles of life post-WWII in the South. The author pulls you in quickly and brings you to tears more than once. It is a reminder of good and bad, love and hate and how they fit together.
