Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. 1984

George Orwell's masterful work leads you into a dystopia eerily familiar to what some of us were fearful of in the late 1940s. It's a dark novel, but it brings to light some of the dangers of a system that effaces the personalities and individuality of a people, and leaves you with a yearning for truth and beauty.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog

A whimsical romp in the land of literature, side by side with a touching and serious story of two social outliers. At first the novel will seem a bit distant and pretentious, but you will find yourself more and more interested in the lives of the young girl, mature beyond her years, and the seemingly blue-collar worker, whose intellegance surpasses the so called elite she works for. This story gives a splash of color to the everyday, and questions what the nature of "class" really is.

The Kite Runner

I was late to find this gem from the literary world, but I absolutely loved it. Hosseini's touching style and engaging writing opens a new world to the western reader. It brings a humanizing element to a part of the world little known to us. I read it in less than a week, due to the compelling nature of the friendship between the two boy protagonists. The story will break your heart, but it is unforgettable.
