Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
by
Maya Angelou
Taylor M B
, March 03, 2011
Everyone in America has heard the name Maya Angelou, we all have a picture of her in our head. What is amazing is her life and how easily accessible it is. After reading "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" I felt as though I grew up with her. Ms. Angelou does everything from becoming the first African American female to conduct a cable car in San Francisco to touring the world with an opera company. If a girl who grew up in the deep south in the 1930's can go on to be Maya Angelou then anyone can overcome their surroundings and become whatever they dream, that message is what makes this book so important.

Girls to the Front

I read this book from cover to cover within days of buying it. I didn't expect it to be so entertaining because it's non fiction, but the riot grrrl movement was so well documented that I felt like I was there. I thought I knew a fair amount about this culture until I started this book and learned so much more. Every teenager, girl or boy, should read Girls to the Front.
