Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Mothering from Your Center Tapping Your Bodys Natural Energy for Pregnancy Birth & Parenting

I picked this book up on a whim while looking for a "What to Expect" sort of book, and have found it so much more reassuring and comforting during the early weeks of my first pregnancy than any medical text has been. The guidance Tami Lynn Kent gives is to listen to yourself, know yourself, and the rest will follow. The message that parenting and pregnancy is not a checklist toward perfection, but rather a integration of a new human into your own unique life space, was one I needed desperately to hear. That I am not alone in feeling excited to explore the parts of motherhood and pregnancy that are not inherent in mainstream culture was another. I highly recommend this book to mothers everywhere.

Main Street
by

Main Street, while written about people nearly a hundred years ago, is quite a relevant tale about a woman compromising her values to move to a small town and live a conventional life. While the specifics of social climbing and commercial status symbols differ, the struggle of the main character to retain her sense of self while fulfilling society's demands are true to today's world. An interesting critique of feminism's goals then and now!
