Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Orphan Masters Son
by
Adam Johnson

, January 01, 2013
Reading The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson, I could not help but think of what life in North Korea must be like. Even though the book was a work of fiction, I believe much of it is based on truth. The story is riveting, the protagonist is resourceful and endearing. I will never think of North Korea again without thinking of Pac Jun Do. This is the best book I read in 2012.

Mr Penumbras 24 Hour Bookstore
by
Robin Sloan
Catherine McBride-Stern
, November 01, 2012
I originally bought this book for the glow-in-the-dark jacket, as I collect books with odd jackets, but the bonus is the story. It is a bibliophile's book as it is about a very different bookstore than even your most unusual indy favorite, and if you happen to be a font-geek too there is an added bonus. The characters are endearing and you find yourself engrossed in the plot as soon as you read the first line. Do yourself a favor and read this amazing book.

Wave
by
Susan Casey

, January 02, 2012
Follow an elite group of tow-in-big-wave riders as they ride the freak waves of the world. You will feel as if you are there as they catch these giants and feel the fear as they describe wipe-outs that break bones and fracture souls. Also visit with scientists that study the change in the world’s geology, arctic glaciers, ocean currents and weather brought on by global warming, and learn what is happening on the ocean floor that will change coastal climates and ocean voyages in the near future. You will also be told what exactly happens to the shipping industry as these 100 footers become more prevalent. A book that puts global warming into perspective relating to what covers most of our earth. Highly recommended, and not for the faint of heart.

What an elegant little book, I wish it did not have to end, and when it did I was moved to tears. This book will have a permanent spot on my bookshelf to be read over and over again.

Infection The Uninvited Universe
by
Gerald Callahan
Catherine McBride-Stern
, January 04, 2011
Infection is an essential part of our biology, some of which we cannot live without, others that will kill us. Knowing the difference is the challenge. From the good microorganisms to the bad, "Infection: The Uninvited Universe" brings it to us in a page turning tale that will astound you and at times make you cringe. Remember the 3 second rule when dropping food on the ground? Truth: there is no 3 second rule. This is a fascinating read.

Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
by
Michael Chabon
Catherine McBride-Stern
, January 09, 2010
Joseph Kavalier, an apprentice to a world famous escape artist, is a young Jew in Nazi occupied Prague. With the help of his mentor he escapes to Brooklyn New York to live with an aunt he never knew about and his cousin Sam Clay who is a budding artist. Together the boys create their first comic book superhero, The Escapist, and the world opens up to them. “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” is the epic story of their American dream, the golden age of comic books, the friends they meet and create with, the woman they both love. It is also the story of America in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s as seen through the eyes of these brilliant, visionary young men. This is my favorite book of the decade, Michael Chabon has a wondrous way with the language and it is a beautiful literary achievement. This has a permanent place in my library and one, despite its size, I have read over again. If you have not read this book you will do yourself a big favor by sitting down with it today.

Carlos Ruiz Zafon, again, gives us a can't-put-it-down tale of intrigue and suspense. The wonderful thing for the reader is, you can be the interpreter of the story, or you can be directed by the author. I can’t wait for my husband to finish so we can discuss the book.

Three Cups of Tea One Mans Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time
by
Mortenson, Greg and Relin, David Oliver
Catherine McBride-Stern
, February 22, 2009
I have just finished one of the most important books I have ever read. Important because it shows how one person CAN make a tremendous difference in the world with "...the right combination of character and determination..." and because if Greg Mortenson had been in Rumsfeld's shoes after 9/11 by now we would have won the war against terrorism and be heroes instead of evil villains against Islam. I encourage everyone to read this book and for you to encourage your loved ones, friends and neighbors to do so.

Sixty Days & Counting
by
Kim Stanley Robinson
Catherine McBride-Stern
, January 16, 2009
"Sixty Days and Counting" is the final in Kim Stanley Robinson's ecological trilogy and I wish there were more. Global warming, life on the Beltway in our country's capital and science are combined with fully fleged characteres to make this series a must read. Start at the beginning, "Forty Signs of Rain" and do not stop until you are at the end of "Sixty Days and Counting," you won't be sorry.

Judgment of Paris: Judgment of Paris
by
Taber, George M.
Catherine McBride-Stern
, July 09, 2007
Judgement of Paris: California Vs. France..... is one of the best books on the history of Napa Valley I have read, and it includes a brief history of wine making in the US pre-prohibition. Mr. Taber has done a fantistic job of bringing together all the players of that fateful day in May 1976, telling their stories and philosophies of wine making. However, he doesn't stop at French and California wines, he delves into the globalization of winemaking and discusses wines from New Zealand, Australia, Africa and Chile. Grab a glass of wine and start reading.....you will be entertained and informed.

In The Miso Soup
by
Ryu Murakami
Catherine McBride-Stern
, June 17, 2007
I had become addicted to Japanese literature after reading Battle Royale by Koushun Takami a couple of years ago and after reading In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami I am reminded again what draws me. It is chilling, thrilling, and sometimes horrific, but the writting is so matter of fact it makes the unusual seem almost normal.
