Central Park Five A Chronicle of a City Wilding

This book turned my head around... on what is reported in the media, what police detectives do to suspects, what stereotypes we the public so readily believe. I remember the weekend the headlines screamed "Wilding" about this horrible crime; of course these kids were guilty and anyone saying differently was reactionary and playing the race card. I'm writing in cliches because this is how this UNTRUTH was accepted by me at the time. I'd heard the young men were exonerated a few years ago, but that story - cliche again - got very little coverage. I don't recall anyone commenting on it on TV. This book spells it out. It is un-be-liev-able but it is TRUE. I highly recommend this book.

Yes, a book of survival, resilience and redemption - but also of injustice. Well-written. So glad this story has become a best seller.

Long Road Home
by
Ben Shephard

Well-written, well-organized and extremely good narration of this aspect of a war's consequences, and just how devasting WWII was - and this book focuses just in Europe. Author states that material will be frank and not meeting with today's standards of "political correctness" (latter are my words not the author's) when referring to the many ethnic groups involved. For me, I did not know beforehand how much food deprivation was used as a tool by Nazis to kill and oppress people. Also interesting that governments planned for the war's aftermath about as soon as it started. And that disaster relief was hindered by politics and personalities - well, that's predictable but I needed reminding. I knew I was going to love this book when in the introduction Mr. Shephard wrote that he cried when reading another book about the moral history of humanity. His compassion shows through but with no histrionics, just good organized analysis that is not cumbersome to read. Our world really can be a horror, but people go on.
