Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. This is the best epic style standalone book I've read in a long time. The action never stops and is full of finely crafted characters and interesting magic. I liked that the formidable fighter hero also has his flaws and deals constantly with the sorrows of his past. I had a hard time to actually stop reading and eat and sleep.

Echo In the Bone Outlander 07

Diana Gabaldon

Even though you really need to have read the first six books of the series, this is an excellent book. Gabaldon creates such vivid characters and situations that feel like you are standing right outside the circle looking in. With some wonderful plot twists and an engaging storyline - I would recommend this series to anyone and this book as well - but truly, start at the beginning with Outlander, you'll thank me!

Story of Edgar Sawtelle

Bah. Everyone says this is such a great book. Well I disagree. It could have been a terrific book! But it fell short. Even ignoring the obvious problems such as the author not knowing that Tylenol is poisonous to dogs - while the set up was good, the story arc decent and the characters relatively interesting, there is a great deal of meandering that goes nowhere with a completely unsatisfactory ending that destroys the general arc and many threads just completely left untied. It could have been good, but just missed the mark.

Pyrates A Swashbuckling Comic Novel by the Creator of Flashman

One of my absolute favorites! I came accross this book while wandering in a bookstore during a break in a conference. I saw the title and thought that it might be interesting. Read the back cover and decided that it would be worth a try. Read it from cover to cover for the first of many, many times that same evening. I laughed, giggled, wiggled my eyebrows...this book is a terrific sendup of swashbuckling movies and a comment on how we perceive history through our modern eyes. Recommended for anyone who can laugh at themselves and our world around us.
