Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children
by
Ransom Riggs

Riggs used actual photographs to build story of strange children locked in an odd time loop. A sequel and movie are forthcoming, and I am excited!

Unwritten Volume 01 Tommy Taylor & The Bogus Identity
by
Carey, Mike
dawn betts-green
, August 04, 2012
I just discovered this comic, and I am in love! The Unwritten tells the story of how fiction shapes our world and sometimes enters in. This is the first collection of the series, and the next three are just as good.

Stephen King, Scribner

This was the very first book I finished this year, and I LOVED it. I'm a sucker for time travel, fiction or otherwise, and King did an excellent job with his foray into it. One of the best King novels I've read in years.

A classic of lesbian fiction that often gets left off lists. I read this not too long after coming out, and I loved it.

Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabblep Layers
by
Stefan Fatsis
dawn betts-green
, July 21, 2011
I really enjoyed this book! I'm a Scrabble fan, but the people in this book have me beat hands down. Fatsis does an excellent job of becoming part of the community and giving us the lives of the pro Scrabblers. My only complaint is that there were a few places it got a bit more technical than it needed to be. Other than that: awesome!

Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement
by
Kathryn Joyce
dawn betts-green
, May 18, 2011
I used this for an honors thesis on this very subject, and Joyce became the patron saint of my project. Her writing is incredibly approachable, and even for those not in the academic research of religion, this is an excellent book.

Rapture Ready Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture
by
Daniel Radosh
dawn betts-green
, May 18, 2011
I originally picked up this book because I was writing an honors thesis on 20th century Evangelicalism, and I just fell in love with Radosh's voice! The book, while covering a broad and useful swath of Evangelical pop culture suitable for academic research, is written in an easily accessible manner, so that those with no background in Religious Studies can absorb it just as well.

Mean Little Deaf Queer: A Memoir
by
Terry Galloway
dawn betts-green

This is an absolutely brilliant account of a deaf woman in the queer community. I was fortunate enough to hear her speak to a class here, and I could not wait to pick this book up. Take my advice and order it NOW.

Mean Little Deaf Queer
by
Terry Galloway

, December 28, 2009
I am fortunate enough to live in the same city the author calls her sometime home and heard her speak to a class here at FSU. Both in person and on paper, Galloway is brutally honest and brilliant. You can't help but get caught up in her life.

It isn't hard to get drawn into a world with yetis appearing in grocery store freezers and where angels all have stripper names! This is the best and most entertaining novel I've read in quite a long time, and I can't wait to read the rest of his books.

Muslim Women on the Move: Moroccan Women and French Women of Moroccan Origin Speak Out
by
Doris Gray
dawn betts-green
, September 28, 2008
I have read this book twice already, both times for her classes, but I would have read it on my own for sure. Dr. Gray lays out a comparison of Moroccan women and French women of Moroccan origin that is apparently unique in the field. Her analysis of the role of class and education are superb. This book is fabulous for anyone in the fields of Women's Studies, Islamic Studies, or African Studies.

Caged Virgin An Emancipation Proclamation for Women & Islam
by
Ayaan Hirsi Ali
dawn betts-green
, September 28, 2008
While Ali is decidedly confrontational, and this puts off a great number of readers, she raises some very important issues that some are afraid to tackle as openly. She does not mince words and says precisely what she thinks of the issue, which is sincerely refreshing.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
by
Kingsolver, Barbara and Kingsolver, Camille and Hopp, Steven L.
dawn betts-green
, August 10, 2008
While all things Kingsolver are inherently fabulous, this has quickly become my favorite one of her books second only to the Bean Trees. She and her family spend a year living not just on the land but with the land and discover a few things along the way that we'd all be better for knowing. Anyone concerned about just what future or even or own generations are going to do in the next few decades must read this one.

Looking Glass Wars 01

This is the best fantasy book I have read since the last Harry Potter. All I can say is that you should buy the sequel at the same time, because Beddor's world is addictive.

Sherman Alexie's books are always fabulous, and this one is no exception. The stories in this collection are some of the best ever written, and I'll soon need a new copy because mine is falling completely apart.

I stumbled on this book in a public library almost 10 years ago, and I loved it. I've been looking for it ever since, but it's harder to find than you would think. Books, mystery, what else can you want?
