Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Steering the Craft Exercises & Discussions on Story Writing for the Lone Navigator or the Mutinous Crew
by
Ursula K Le Guin

, December 07, 2011
This is an important volume for any one with desires to write or tell stories better as well as for a reader wanting to gain more from favorite authors. Knowing the tools of crafting a story is not the same as putting those tools to good use. Le Guin offers clarity on these tools as well as strength training practice! A slim volume that packs a whole writerly gym into a mere 172 pages! Students of writing, writers, and storytellers will gain valuable insight from Steering the Craft by Ursula Le Guin. In case you are not familiar with Le Guin, she is more than accomplished in the field of writing and accolades: more than 16 novels, 5 volumes of poetry, eight collections of stories, 10 children's books, 2 collections of essays, and 2 volumes of translation~ all since 1966. Awards: National Book Award, multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, the Kafka, Pushcart Awards and the Howard Vursell Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Cold Sassy Tree
by
Olive Ann Burns
Lisa from Florida
, June 29, 2010
Cold Sassy Tree is a poignant tale of a young boy on the farm as he witnesses the illness of a grandparent. The reader experiences the exuberance of youth, passions of life, love of the little things and the heart wrenching episode of a death in the family. Olive Burns tells this story while she herself was undergoing treatment for her own cancer. This is her testament to working through the disease giving her readers a treasure to encourage them to remember to laugh though the heart ache and pain of loss. Cold Sassy leaves the reader with a good feeling of being alive but with a new sensitivity for those facing a crisis whether it be their own, one of a family member or friend. Burns gives us strength through her novel to be there in the tough moments. Thank you, Olive Ann Burns, for your foresight, generosity and giving of yourself to make us strong.
