White Oleander
by
Janet Fitch
Cherie Vivian
, March 15, 2013
White Oleander. A brilliant, lyrical masterpiece by Janet Fitch. It was her first novel and to date, her best. Fitch's words are like poetry, piano music, a visual sonata with a jazzy underbelly. The opening setting of the "Santa Ana winds blowing in hot from the desert" stirs just the right amount of provocative foreshadowing and poison. The main characters are vivid and haunting: an artistic mother with borderline personality disorder who decides the remedy for her cheating lover is his lethal consumption of oleander; a young daughter coming-of-age whose life is forever altered by her mother's narcissism. Fitch explores the California foster system and delves into the demons of each of her characters, major and minor, with raw passion. Fitch is a consummate storyteller. It is a story that touches the soul. Much overlooked, one of those great American novels which whispers its subtle genius.

Foreign Faction Who Really Kidnapped JonBenet
by
A James Kolar

, January 30, 2013
Foreign Faction by James Kolar is a "must read" for all true crime buffs and those of us interested in seeking justice for a six year old girl. The author's research alone should win him a prize. Kolar takes his reader to the core of this sixteen-year-old murder case. He was an insider to the investigation, he knows what he is talking about. This book will haunt you and take you on a journey from which you will never be the same. All the pieces of the puzzle are like threads pulling together. Kolar HAS cracked this case. Foreign Faction is a masterpiece of suspense and sadness -- especially when the reader finishes the last page. This is an age-old story of the answers glaringly staring you in the face. The killer is right under your nose but too shocking to want to believe. Without revealing too much, best advice is: read this superb book. You will never be the same.

Five stars, two-thumbs-up for author James Kolar's work! He has cracked this case. The pieces of the puzzle were right under everyone's nose all along but... well, you must read this book. It is the age-old motive for most murders: jealousy. This "inside job", however, is very sad and poignant indeed. There will never be justice for the six-year-old murder victim. The case will not be prosecuted. There are no winners here. My hat goes off to this writer who had the courage to reveal what he knew. Thank you, Mr. Kolar. Again, a MUST READ.

Small Sacrifices
by
Ann Rule
Cherie Vivian
, July 08, 2012
I am an ardent reader of true-crime stories, an Ann Rule aficionado. "Small Sacrifices" is Ann Rule at her absolute best. This true story will rivet you from beginning to end, tug at your heart strings, and chill you to the bone. There are mothers out there, believe it or not, who are not capable psychologically or emotionally of protecting and loving their children. Diane Downs is one of them. A psychopath with borderline personality disorder and a host of narcissitic traits, Diane Downs is the poster mother for what no child should have to endure. "Small Sacrifices" is a harrowing tale indeed. This page-turner not only takes you on a journey into the criminal justice system, but reminds you there is still goodness in people - and justice in time, trumps evil. Vivid descriptive settings of the Pacific Northwest (Oregon) and the Southwest(Arizona)capture the reader. And the characters, so well developed, bring you under their skin. This is a true-crime classic.

Turn of Mind
by
LaPlante, Alice
Cherie Vivian
, January 01, 2012
"Turn of Mind" by Alice La Plante is not your grandmother's murder mystery. The reader gets inside the skin of each character - or so you think. An absorbing page-turner that takes you to dark places you are compelled to go. At its core, this tragic story underscores the dynamics of a brilliant physician, losing her mind to dementia, whose maternal instinct to protect her daughter comes full-circle. This book is superb.
