Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Gardening at the Dragons Gate At Work in the Wild & Cultivated World
by
Johnson, Wendy
kzmichels
, August 21, 2012
A beautiful, beautiful ode to place-- master gardener Wendy Johnson recounts the natural history and the quirks of the place where she lives, green gulch farm in northern California. But this book is also a manual of how we should all garden, and of The mindset and philosophy necessary for us to learn our place as deeply and thoughtfully as she. With lines like "it is wise to remember that this delicate skin of the earth that we spend our life cultivating will also one day sink down and become a thin stripe in the stacks of time," Wendy gently reminds us of the zen Buddhist Philosophy that undergirds her work, and also of the beauty in the impermanence of gardening and work in the natural world. I highly, joyfully recommend this book to any and all gardeners, farmers, nature lovers, place makers, and eaters.

Swamplandia is an absolutely brilliant, thrilling ride. It is an engaging story in itself, but also pointed social commentary. Read it for fun, read it for cathartic effect. Fall in love with the characters and the setting and the ridiculous place names. Just read it!

What Are People For
by
Wendell Berry

A lovely book. Berry includes hopeful, thoughtful, disparaging, and beautiful essays to create a holistic image of humanity. From prose that rings like poetry to pure opinions and thoughts, each essay is a gem. Read a few, or devour them all in one sitting: What Are People For? is a heartfelt exposition on people, food, love, and life. A must read!
