I have to say that I loved the first book in this series. I wasn't sure how the sequel would fare but was pleasantly surprised and could hardly wait to finish it. Without ruining it for others, the continued journey of the peculiars was suspenseful and intriguing. The new peculiars they encountered were full of wisdom and insight. The ending was a cliffhanger so I assume there will be a third book which I must have!!!!

Wow! Lulu's birthday is coming up and she wants a dinosaur! Can't we parents relate when our kids want things that are impossible to get. However, Judy V. with her wit and charm have Lulu find such a gift. Only to find out that Lulu wants to have a dinosaur for a pet and the dinosaur wants her for a pet. Hysterically funny! My 2nd grade class found the story hilarious! I can't wait for the new one to come out...

Judy Viorst has become my new best friend in children's books. I teach second grade now and the kids LOVE the fact that the narrator (author) puts comments in the book. Lulu is a spoiled only child but learns some valuable lessons in life through patient friends.

Pact
by
Jodi Picoult
Cynthia Hopp
, December 27, 2013
This story was a familiar life event where boy meets girl and they are neighbors. However, the twist of the story is that the love is so strong between them that they agree to a pact of remaining with each other no matter what and something goes wrong. This book was hard to put down because the reader doesn't really know why the tragedy happens unless you read between the lines. Young love, almost like Romeo and Juliet.

Snow
by
Cynthia Rylant

Cynthia Rylant never disappoints her audience with her fantastic books. Snow is a glimpse back to childhood; when we liked snow, it was fun to be in not like adults today who wince at the weather forecast if snow is on the radar. The children will make connections with this book and make the adults realize that we make too big a deal about snow and should just enjoy its magical presence.

Birds

What a beautiful picture book! It captures the essence of familiar birds and children can make connections by experience. If children have not been lucky enough to have seen any of the birds in the book, they now have a foundation! Well written & illustrated!!!

Lillys Purple Plastic Purse
by

As a kindergarten teacher, I can relate to the excitedness of Lily wanting to share something with the class. Lily can't wait and blurts out her news for show and tell. Mr. Slinger, cool teacher, takes away her belongings for the day and Lily is so angry that she draws a really mean picture of Mr. Slinger only later to regret doing it. Lily takes responsibility for her actions by giving herself a time out at home and draws Mr. Slinger a really, really, really, really, nice apology picture. Mr. Henkes captures a young child perfectly!

Shelter Me
by
Juliette Fay

, January 03, 2012
Shelter me shocks the reader from the start and then the slow process of healing begins. Was the handyman a sign from God? Was the porch a place of safety? I enjoyed the fact that the main character was honest, courageous beyond her comfort zone, and was willing to let the future road be paved. I just happened upon this book and was not sure if I would like it or not. I loved it!

I could not put this book down! Poor Jacob caught between the stories of his grandfather and the disfunction of his family. It makes me wonder what choice I would have made in his situation. For those loving science fiction, this one will quench your thirst.

Help
by
Kathryn Stockett
Cynthia Hopp
, January 01, 2012
Being born in the late 1950s, I read this book and was so upset not with the "help" but the way the white ladies treated them as if they were dirty or inferior. The maids did EVERYTHING for them including raise their children and the arrogance of the white ladies made me ill. This book was really historical fiction and so well written! I hope that everyone reads this book or watches the movie to see just how cruel some white folk could be.

Room
by

I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this book. I thought perhaps this child had a contagious disease that he would need to be kept in a solitary room. To my surprise, this sweet little boy grew up in this "room" thinking it was his world. The sadness of his mother's plight when it became apparent gave me reason to scream outloud. The mom's love for her child was above and beyond and commendable! The escape plan scared me but I was so happy to see them both free. What troubled me was that the world didn't treat them special but rather considered them both broken. That was the farthest from the truth.

The Hans Wilhelm books are so awesome for beginning readers. For children not ready to read, a skill of "reading the pictures" is easy with the illustrations and facial expressions of Noodle. Great life lessons in the book!!!
