Excellent account of what it was like to live in a war zone, Italy WWII. The courage of so many in dangerous circumstances, the Origo's and especially the contadini who risked their lives by sheltering escaped Allied soldiers and Italian partisans, is especially inspiring. I recommend a visit to the Origo estate, La Foce, in Tuscany if you ever get the chance.
