Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. People of the Book

I was enthralled with the beautifully written saga of a rare Jewish book. Its life through the centuries enlightened me and kept me wondering about my own ancestors and the books they may have touched and then lost. Its other main character, a rare book expert, has adventures too, but the book itself clings within my imagination at year's end.

Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest

I wanted a new wildflower ID book for hikes and post-hike wildflower identification. 'Nature' greeting cards created from my digital phots cry out for correct flower names. This one book insures that more of my flower finds are suitably named; besides it is a beautiful volume and, not too big for a small pack.

Zoli's quick-paced beautifully written story transported me into Roma culture across numerous decades in several countries: a captivating saga of a character to be long-remembered, respected, loved.

Resistance
by
Barry Lopez

What an imagination! Lopez' nine captivating stories divulge widely varied and intriguing lives of their fictional authors. These vignettes are summoned by contemporary government threats let loose in his opening vignette. Although its range is mostly believeable, one wonders how the real stories of more ordinary resistant citizens might fare through Lopez' magnificent creativity.

Proverbs of Ashes Violence Redemptive Suffering & the Search For What Saves Us
by
Rita Nakashim Brock

At last! This very thoughtful, readable, and highly personal book can completely engage one's intellect and heart toward transforming traditional Christian 'sacrifice theology.' New meaning for Jesus' life/death emerges from each minister-co-author's dramatic life story. Weaving their stories through the Christian Year, Parker & Nakashima establish a firm Christian stance. We are offered a much needed fresh outlook that can truly free contemporary seekers from a 'dying for our sins' reason for Jesus' life/death/resurrection.
