Driving Mr Yogi

Driving Mr. Yogi is a story about friendship, loyalty and respect. It tells the tale of a baseball friendship between two old New York Yankees. Yogi Berra was a great catcher for the Yanks in the 1950's and 60's. Ron Guidry was an outstanding pitcher for the Yankees in the 1970's, a time when Yogi was a coach for the same team. Their friendship was renewed in later years as both attended Yankee spring training camps in Florida. Guidry took on the task of shepherding Yogi around from the time he arrived in camp until the end of spring training. Throughout the book the reader gets the sense of what it is like for a young player (Guidry) to develop and grow up with his idol (Berra) and follow how their friendship evolved from their playing days to their days as ambassadors for the Yankees. It is heartening to see how the younger Guidry respects and cares about the old Yankee, and in general how the younger generation of players look up to the old veterans who are now Yankee legends. I'm not sure there is another baseball team who honors and respects its former players more than the Yankees do. But the jist of this books is the personal friendship between Guidry and Berra and how it has gone beyond simply that of former teammates to that of friends in life.

Damn Yankees: Twenty-Four Major League Writers on the World's Most Loved (and Hated) Team
by
Rob Fleder

There is such a thing as sports "literature". It is not, as some would claim, an oxymoron. The book, Damn Yankees, edited by Rod Fleder is real proof. Some of the best sports writing is created by writers who do not write exclusively about sports. Damn Yankees is a great example of some of these writers, who may have an interest in sports, but do not make a living at it. Writers such as Colum McCann, Pete Dexter, Nathaniel Rich, and others, provide interesting and personal stories about their love / hate relationship with baseball's New York Yankees. There are other stories by more traditional sports authors such as Jane Leavy and Frank Deford, but the common thread is wonderful sports literature. This is a great collection of baseball writing.
