Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Zeitoun
by
Dave Eggers

Wow! I just finished Zeitoun. Though I know such things were happening, the narrative makes one fully aware of the extent and the impact it has on families. I feel like I know the Zeitoun family now.

Brother, I'm Dying
by
Edwidge Danticat
Bentley
, July 22, 2010
This is a beautiful memoir about the lives and deaths of two brothers who are fathers to Danticat. Without being preachy, Danticat also shows us some of the human implications of policy decisions. Very moving and hard to put down. I didn't want to let it go even when I reached the end of the book.

After this book was recommended to me years ago, I finally got around to reading it. This story is so moving, it makes me want to change the world by helping the poor too. Truly inspiring.

Invention of Air A Story of Science Faith Revolution & the Birth of America
by
Steven Johnson
Bentley
, June 16, 2010
This is a very enjoyable biography/ history of science/ intellectual history book. Johnson covers the life and work of Priestly while putting him in his intellectual milieu of the Honest Whigs, Franklin, Lavoisier, Adams, and Jefferson all the while offering insight into the history and philosophy of science. As this book makes clear, Priestly was not just a scientist, but a theologian and political thinker as well. Highly recommended.

When Everything Changed The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present
by
Gail Collins
Bentley
, June 03, 2010
Like Ms. Collins' columns, this book is delightfully easy to read. But the reader should be forewarned -- while it is said to be "the Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present" it is primarily the journey of baby boomer women from 1960 to present. Earlier generations are given passing remarks (to the point that I was offended for them at times) and later generations are largely ignored. Yes, in the section on the 1980s and 1990s Collins talks of child care issues and cultural changes; but many of those were the boomers as well. That being said, the book is a wonderfully readable history and celebration of baby boomer women.

Woman Behind The New Deal The Life & Legacy of Frances Perkins Social Security Unemployment Insurance & the Minimum Wage
by
Kirstin Downey
Bentley
, May 25, 2010
It is about time someone wrote a book length work on the too often overlooked, Frances Perkins. She was such an amazing woman. Her passion for workers rights was more than admirable, not to mention the fact that she was the first woman cabinet member. This very readable book follows Perkins life from childhood to her work in NYC to her being Secretary of Labor until her last days at Cornell.

Wonderful coming of age novel about an Indian American boy growing up in suburban Cincinnati. I highly recommend it to anyone who was the child who didn't fit in.
