Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Along with the next book in the series, The Lewis Man, this is one of my standout books for early 2013. It combines a evocative, wistful mood, an incredible sense of place in a relative unfamiliar area (Outer Hebrides) and complex, sympathetic characters. I'm ready right now to read the third book in the trilogy and plan to look into this author's other series.

Talk about can't-put-it-down. Found myself reading while walking to the train. Makes you really think about what it means to be a parent and how far you would go to protect, defend and believe your children. What two parents do in the face of an impossible dilemma.

Talk about can't put it down. Found myself reading it as I was walking to the train. Really makes you think about what it means to protect, defend and believing in your childres - and how different parents handle an impossibly difficult situation. A dilemma no parent would want to face.

It's a cliche to say a book is un-put-down-able but this one truly lives up to it. Written from the viewpoint of a brilliant woman surgeon whose mind is deteriorating from Alzheimers - and is accused of murdering her best friend. Can't wait for this author's next one.
