Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu & Their Race to Save the Worlds Most Precious Manuscripts

This is one of the BEST books I've read in years! It's the true story of what numerous people, but one in particular, went through to save the ancient manuscripts of Middle Eastern cultures from destruction by the Taliban, ISIS and the Islamic radicals. Written by a news magazine reporter who spent a great deal of time in the area, the raw reality of what the hero went through to preserve the beautiful manuscripts for today is often unbelievable. Lives were given. Hands were cut off. Many were tortured. This is a great read for those of us who have not yet visited the Middle East and want an understanding of the importance of their cultures and religions.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

What an amazing story! The book is well researched, well written and because it's non-fiction, really very amazing. It wasn't a book I'd have chosen randomly to read but after several recommendations I decided to give it a try. Then I found it was hard to put down at the end of a chapter. Henrietta's story makes me wonder how many other medical miracles came from dark research secrets like this one. In addition to being a "great read," I was pleased to have found a used hardback copy at Powells for less than $10 and I'm passing it along to a friend.
