An Inheritance of Ashes

The story takes place in the south where a war between humans, The Wicked God and Twisted Things has just ended. While sisters, Hallie and Martha, wait for Martha's husband to return, with winter coming on they decide to hire a veteran to help with the farm. I had a hard time getting into this book, I'm not going to lie. There was a whole lot that didn't come together for me. The pacing was slow, my mind kept wondering and I lost interest easily. I had questions while reading the book and after finishing the book I'm still left with a lot of questions. The Twisted Things were something that resembled a bird. I'm still not sure what they are, where they came from or who their God was. I couldn't connect to any of the characters. I didn't like the relationship between Hallie and Martha. I wish Martha was a little me nicer to Hallie, she was really rude to her. I know she was pregnant but I don't think she should of took out her aggravation on her sister. I did like the atmosphere of the book, it was creepy. I just kind of wish the plot was a little faster. Thank you to Clarion Books and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Princess of Thorns
by
Stacey Jay
SarahS WondrousReadings
, December 12, 2014
This is not a retelling of Sleeping Beauty instead it's more of an extension of sorts. It was the story of Sleeping Beauty's daughter, Aurora, and son, Jor. I really liked the relationship between Princess Aurora and Prince Niklaas. The humor between them was hilarious. It was NOT instant-love, in fact they hated each other, once Niklaas found out about Ror being a girl. I also loved that there was magic and fairies and ogres in the story, and the other fairy tale characters mashed in the book as well. Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel. There was also a twist of The Swan Princess. I had a hard time getting into the story but after the first few chapters it picked up for me. Normally I really dislike multiply POVs but this was different, I found myself flying through the entire book. Aurora was a great heroine, she was strong and goodhearted even if she was a little stubborn. She really cared for her brother and would do anything to take care of him, including give herself up to save his life. And I didn't really like Niklaas at first, he seemed conceited and too-good-for-anybody, but I soon warmed up to him, I found it is just part of his charm. The Ogre Queen and all the ogres, were terrifying characters, how they stole human souls. The ending was wrapped up nicely but it felt a bit rushed. Princess of Thorns was my first Stacey Jay book and I will be looking forward to reading her other books. I'm really interested in Of Beast and Beauty. I can see why people love her books, her writing was great. Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Crash Into You
by
Katie McGarry
SarahS WondrousReadings
, February 26, 2014
Noah had his happy ending (in Pushing the Limits), Beth had her happy ending (in Dare You To) I very much wanted Isaiah to have a happy ending of his own. Isaiah has had a rough background, he has been through a lot. Rachel has a great life or so it would seem... Everything looks perfect on the outside of Rachel's life but it's anything but. Her mother sees her only as a replacement for her older sister Colleen, who passed away from cancer and has Rachel speak on Colleen's behalf at the charity events that their mother holds for Colleen. Everyone is supposed to love and miss Colleen but Rachel don't in fact Rachel hates her older sister or more to the point she hates cancer that has taken her sister from them and tore up the once happy family apart. Rachel's older brothers only add to her growing problems she has by being overly protective. On top of all that the anxiety attacks that her family thought has gone away with the therapy has started up again but to cover them up she acts like nothing is wrong. To cope with the stress she takes an interest in cars and motors, and becomes addicted to driving fast in cars. Speed isn't the only thing that she becomes addicted to, she also can't seem to stay away from Isaiah. With piercings and tattoos she knows her family won't accept him. But what brings them together will cost them everything. All the characters were great. I couldn't help but feel for Isaiah after how Dare You To left off. Rachel was not only a pretty girl she was also smart. Abby was another one that I really liked. Crash Into You switches from Isaiah's point of view to Rachel's. I love all of their background stories. This series could go on and on and I wouldn't mind! Katie McGarry has a way of writing that sucks me into the stories and l love that about a book. Bring on Take Me On!

Defy Trilogy 01 Defy
by
Sara B Larson
SarahS WondrousReadings
, January 08, 2014
When I first heard about this book right away I thought of Mulan, where a girl pretends to be a boy to fight. Alexa pretends to be a boy for a very different reason. Alexa joins the army as Alex in an attempt to stay out of the breeding house after her home is burned down and her parents are murdered. She cuts her hair short, dresses like her brother and becomes part of the prince's personal guards. Alex soon becomes the best fighter of the guards. Alexa starts to feel more than just a guard toward Damian. She isn't the only person pretending though, Rylan is hiding feelings for Alexa and the spoiled Prince Damian is also hiding he isn't all the he seems either. And when an attempt to assassinate the prince fails Alex is moved in close to Prince Damian's room, but that's not enough and Damian along with Alexa and her fellow guard, Rylan, is kidnapped. There was romance in this book but I did not like it. It was not the love triangle, I don't mind love triangles, it just seemed forced and not believable. It was a quick book though, there was action and adventure that kept me reading. I liked that Alexa was a brave, strong character, she didn't need anyone to save her. This book had some issues but it was Sara's first book and I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes. I'll be reading the next book. Thank you to Scholastic Press and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ascendance Trilogy 01 False Prince

We start off with an orphan named Sage. Sage is somewhat of a troublemaker. He does not follow rules and is quite the rebel. When he meets Conner, a nobleman, who kidnaps him. He is not the only one, there are three other boys about his age, all orphans. There names are, Roden, Tobias, and Latamer. No one knows why or where they are being taken. They soon learn that the entire royal family has been murdered, and the kingdom is on the edge of war. Regents have their beady eyes on the throne. But Conner has his own plans. That is where the boys come into play. Conner will do anything to get what he wants, even kill. I loved the twist at the end, I never saw it coming at all. Characters are extremely important in stories like this, for me and these characters were great. Conner was ruthless, cold-hearted. Sage is clever sharp witted; He is one of my favorites of the books I've read this year. Now I need to get my hands on the sequel, The Runaway King soon!

This Song Will Save Your Life
by
Leila Sales
SarahS WondrousReadings
, August 25, 2013
This book has some heavy issues, it's about bulling and suicide or attempted suicide. Elise is somewhat of an outcast in school and as the years go by she feels more and more isolated. Elise is at the end of her rope. She is contemplating suicide, when she stumbles upon an underground club, what she discovers changes her life. Music and DJing. There was some romance in the book but I liked how it didn't overshadow the whole story. This book was very uplifting and inspiring. Everyone in the book seemed so relatable. Especially Elise. That made it even harder to hear her struggles. I loved the quotes by famous bands in between each of the chapters. I also liked how her parents were a part of the book, they were not absent or messed up in some way, which I think a lot of parents or guardians are not really that helpful in young adult books, that I thought was really nice. Thank you to Farrar, Straus and Giroux /Netgalley for providing me this eARC for an honest review.

Proxy 01

, June 22, 2013
In this futuristic novel the world is divided by the rich, the Lux, from the poor. The wealthiest people can get anything they want; latest technology, genetically modified genes; or even get away with murder. They are patrons, they have proxies to take their punishments. Knox is from the Upper City and Sydney Carton or Syd, is from the Valve, a part of the Lower City. An orphan, he has never known his parents, and has nothing but debt. When Knox gets into a car accident and kills a girl, it's Sydney who has to pay the price, with his life. But Syd is no ordinary proxy. And when Knox meets Syd their lives are altered. Marie is from the Upper City, but she's not like other kids form the Upper City. She's a Cause Girl, someone who believes the world can be different, better, for everyone. She will do anything she can to try to change it. Along with Knox, she helps Syd get to the Rebooters. A group of people who have plans on overrunning the system. There was a lot of action in this book. I liked the twists and turns. The end of the book surprised me. I will keep an eye out for the next book. A huge hank you to Penguin and NetGalley for this ecopy in exchange for an honest review.

All I Need
by
Susane Colasanti
SarahS WondrousReadings
, May 21, 2013
I was excited to start this one because the cover looked so adorable and the synopsis sounded cute, I did like it but it didn't live up to my exceptions. Told in alternating POV's between Skye and Seth. Skye and Seth meet one summer at a beach party and instantly fall head over heels in love. They part ways after spending just two days together and can't seem to get each other out of their heads for the next few years. When they bump into each other things resume as if they didn't go anywhere. The characters were a little bit flat. Skye was whiny and annoying. It was boring in some parts, maybe not boring but slow, it came to a standstill in the middle of the book. Along with the break, a three year time break, that made things a little confusing. This was the second Susane Colasanti book I have read, the first being Keep Holding On, and while they were very different stories, I could definitely tell they were from the same author. I think All I Need is a quick, fun, sweet summer read. Perfect beach read that's for sure! Thank Penguin and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Beta 01

Elysia is a beta, one of the first teenage clones. She is programmed to have the same thoughts as a real teenager, but has no actual feelings. Sold to the Bratton family as a replacement for an older child that went off to collage. They seemed nice at first, but soon finds out that something is not quite right. Elysia starts to have her own feelings, which then lead to rebellion. The beginning was promising, but for me it didn't live up to my exceptions. The book was a little slow in the middle. Elysia was a interesting character but she seemed cold and I could not relate to her. There is some disturbing material in the book. The book reminded me of Glitch, in a way. Overall it was an enjoyable book, I'll be checking out the second book for sure! Thank you to Disney Hyperion and NetGalley for the ebook in exchange for an honest review!

Everyone says she's madly in love with Thomas, but she can't remember anything. How's she to marry someone she can't even remember being in love with? When Aria goes to visit Thomas for some answers, all she gets is more questions because before she can even arrive at the Foster's she meets a guy that saves her from a street gang. She finds that she can't stop thinking about the mysterious Hunter. She soon finds the closest people around her may be the biggest betrayal of all. In this futuristic novel the world building was great. Everything was so detailed. I liked how she incorporated global warming and it's effects in the book. I adored Hunter! He was appealing, brave, gorgeous and intriguing, I can't say enough good things about him. This was one of those books I couldn't hardly put down, the only time I did was because I had to go to bed. The only negative thing I would say about it is that the ending seemed kind of rushed to me, maybe it was just because I tore through the pages. I'm looking forward to reading the next book, which comes out in 2013! Recommended for of fantasy, dystopian and romance. Cursed by the fey war, Jane wears an iron mask to contain the curse and to hide her scar. She takes up a job for Edward Rochart. Being governess to Mr. Rochart's daughter is not what she thought it would be. This is a retelling of Jane Eyre, which I have not read, so I can't compare how alike the two are, but I do know what the book is about. The cover! Yeah it's amazing, but everyone knows how I like my covers! I liked the Gothic atmosphere of it, and the beginning was promising, but it sort of slowed down and went downhill form there. The last half of the book stood at a standstill for me. I was confused and found myself rereading pages back. There was nothing wrong with the heroine Jane. And I liked Dorie somewhat, I liked the interactions between Jane and Dorie. It was the romance didn't do it for me, it was weird and creepy. I don't know if I'm going to be picking up the next book. You might enjoy it if you like classics. Thank you to Tor Books and NetGally for this ARC. 2.5/5 stars

Mia, the main character, is just you'r average American teenager. When something happens to Mia in the beginning of the book and she is sent to live with her relatives in Italy. I liked the dark and creepy aspect of the book. But I found myself getting lost a lot of the time while reading the book. One minute I was into the story then I had no clue what was happening. The ending felt unfinished to me, I did not like that. The crush on her cousin was a little weird, more than a little, a lot weird. Thanks to Egmont USA and NetGalley for this eARC!

3.5 Jane has no memories after being in an accident. She grew up in foster care until the age of 16 when she is granted a scholarship for Birch Grove, a private school for girls complete with it's own cottage! Jane settles in well at Birch Grove, she has made friends and everything seems good. She meets the handsome Lucian or Lucky and his slacker brother Jacob aka Jack. But things are not quite what they appear at Birch Grove. I loved the characters, Jane was a strong character, I liked how she grew within the story. Jack was my favorite, he was so funny. Mary Violet was another great character. I disliked Lucky, he was selfish and arrogent. The cover caught my attention, like every book. It was a little slow at first. I really enjoyed trying to unravel the mystery. Thank you to Tor/Macmillian and NetGalley for sending me a copy of this book for review!!

Thank you to Feiwel & Friends and NetGalley! Lucky. It's what Robie Mitchell is considered but she doesn't feel very lucky when she finds herself living a nightmare, stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a flimsy raft! With an unconscious co-pilot her only company, and a bag of Skittles for food! While visiting Aunt Jillian, unexpectedly she's called away, Robie makes the choice to go home. The cargo plane that she catches has a weight limit but Robie didn't get that memo. The plane starts to go down Robie and Max are the only ones that got out alive. Robie was a little whiny. The characters in this book are very sleepy, there's a lot of sleeping in this book, lol. I really like survival stories like this. The story moved fast, maybe a little too fast, rushed a little. ~spoiler~ If you have not read the book, please don't read the following! The end of the book was a little confusing for me, I kept asking myself "Was Max really there or had she gone crazy and imaged he was?"

I can never get enough apocalyptic stories, when I saw this book on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read it. From page one the book grabbed my attention and held it. I liked the idea of being trapped in a superstore (honestly, who wouldn't want to be stuck in Wal-mart if something catastrophic happened? I know I would!). I liked the different characters in the book. What a great ending, I really want to know what happens in book 2! Recommended for readers 15+. Dani believes she has nine lives. Why? Because she has been in more accidents that should of killed her, but she's lived. Normally I wouldn't like a main character like Dani. She was such a bully. Her snarky, hurtful way she deals with people really made me dislike her. Maybe that's her way of dealing with her twin sister's illness. But I might be the same way if my sister was diagnosed with cancer. I liked Sarah's writing, it seemed effortless, everything flowed well. You really feel for the characters. 4.5 stars This was a completely magical book and I was under it's spell! The world that Leigh Bardugo has created was amazing. Everything was so vivid, the story line flowed good. It was well written. It had everything that I love in books; action, magic, adventure, an exotic location, some romance (no insta-love)! The characters were amazing! I loved them all. This book surprised me, I didn't know what to expect before I started it, but I'm sure glad I had the opportunity to read it. Buy the book when it comes to stores I know I will, why because it's pure awesomeness! My only question is: When is the second book coming out? Thanks so much to Henry Holt and Co. and NetGalley!

What an awesome book! I was hooked from the first chapter. I love mermaid stories but I don't read a lot of them. You and I would call them mermaids/mermen just don't let Galen hear you. He hates the 'M' word. To him they're Syrena. Emma is you'r average run of the mill clumsy girl, or is she? Emma is on vacation in Florida with her best friend, Chloe, when she bumps right into (literally) the uber hot Galen. They feel a connection right away. Shortly after their little run in the unthinkable happens, Chloe is attacked by a shark. That's when Emma finds out she exhibits some not so human qualities, she can not only talk to the shark but it understand her as well! This was such a hilarious story. I was laughing throughout the book. The characters were so funny. Emma: I liked her, but her clumsiness made me unable to not like her Galen: hot, funny, sarcastic, caring, totally swoon-worthy, an being a prince doesn't hurt ;) I liked the relationship between Emma and Galen, they were so funny together with their arguing and bickering. Rayna: Galen's twin sister, Toraf's 'mate' (wife) stubborn, she acted like a spoiled brat but it's only the first book in the series, you can't count her out just yet! Toraf: he was funny, and sweet The cover is beautiful. And the ending?! Ohmysweetgoodness! Such a cliffhanger ending, it makes me want to read the next book for sure! Charlie Blake has had a rough life. After losing both parents, moving from foster home to foster home, 10 year old Charlie comes to stay with Jacob. Living with Jacob, brings nightmares. Charlie's first day at school is not much better, until he meets Alex, an outspoken girl he befriends. The prologue was what made me want to read this book it sounded so awesome and it was! This fast-paced novel had fantasy, mythology, action and adventure. It was a unique story. The characters were enjoyable and relatable. I liked Alex a lot, she stands up to the kid that bullied Charlie. Alecia Stone did an fantastic job! I got into the story. It was a quick fun read. I'm excited to see what happens in the next book. After Gene's family dies, he's on his own. Living his life as an impostor, with no one look after him but himself. But he knows the rules like the back of his hand. He has to, to blend in so well with them. To not be mauled by them. Everything goes as planned until he is chosen to take part in 'The Hunt'. At first I thought this book was about werewolves, but I was pleasantly surprised it's about vampires! It is disgusting in some parts with the blood and saliva dripping down their chins. They eat like ravenous wild animals. But I loved it, lol! It has a male's point of view, which I don't see very often. The end of the book left a lot of questions, with that cliffhanger ending. After 3 years of living in a bunker, they are out of food. With their family starving Sherry and her father have no choice but to leave the confinement of their bunker to find food. Once they emerge they find the devastating truth. I really like my own space and I think being stuck in a bunker with my family for 3 long years would drive my up the way crazy! (not that I don't love my family) (= I say this all the time whenever I read a dystopian novel but I'll say again, I love post-apocalyptic/dystopian books. I don't or I haven't read a lot of zombie books before but this was a real creepy book. Not technically zombies but humans contaminated with a mutated rabies virus, they 'cry' milky white fluid from their eyes, which is why they are called Weepers. This book seemed short, but it was fast paced. I read it within an hour. Sherry has a bit of a obsession, fascination or problem with numbers, but I guess there's nothing else for her to do other than count. The romance between Sherry and Joshua was good, not instantly drawn toward each other, it developed over time. Thank you NetGalley and Usborne for sending me a review copy!

Registereds are well fed and protected from rogue vamps and other dangers while Unregistereds are half starved barely living on the fringes of societies. While the registereds live a privileged life it also has it's draw backs, they must give blood. Being unregistered means that they don't have to give blood, but it also means you are unprotected from danger. Allison Sekemoto is one of the unregistereds, living in an abandoned school building, with her friends. She has had a hard life. Hunger is nothing new to her. Allison doesn't just sit there and take it though, while out on a scavenging for food, she finds a whole basement full of food. Going back to get the food means Allison and her gang must go through the rabid infested ruins, but it's a risk they're willing to take and it costs them their lives. Lying on the ground dying a mysterious vampire named Kanin finds her. He gives her a choice, a quick death or to become like him, an immortal. Allison has always hated vampires, for what they are, what they've done, everything about them, but she doesn't want to give up either. Once she becomes the thing she hates most, a monster, she fights to hold onto her humanity, struggles with the demon that threatens to overpower her. Kanin is a good teacher, although cold, secretive and standoffish, he has his reasons. He teaches Allie what it takes to survive as a vampire. But Allison's time with Kanin is short lived. She soon has to leave. She comes across Zeke and his small band of traveling humans. In their quest to find Eden, a city without the threat of vampires or rabids. From the first page I was drawn into Julie's world. The characters of the book are amazing. Allie was strong and afraid of nothing. She was a fighter. Zeke was sweet, caring and compassionate. The vampires in this book were terrifying and bloodthirsty (think 30 days of Night) and the rabids were horrifying (I thought of The Descend). I love dystopian and I love vampires so for me this was one of my favorites of 2012. Beg, burrow or steal (well not steal) this book because you will want to read it! Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Teen!

Like a lot of the books that I pick to read it was the cover that drew me in, the cover is beautiful in a creepy way. Mirabelle or Mira, has lived a sheltered life. She has lived with her two godmothers after her mother and father were killed when she was just a baby. Just before her sixteenth birthday Mira decides to run away to Beau Rivage, the place where her parents were killed. There she finds a little more than she's bargained for. It took me only one day to finish it, for me that's good because I normally read slow. I loved the author's twist on the fairy tales. I got emerged in the book, became part of it. This is one of my favorite retelling of fairy tales. The mix of mystery, fairy tales, and yes there was romance. It was fun guessing which character was from which fairy tale. The characters were great, I loved them all. The only thing I would say about it was the beginning was kind of slow for me, and the end was just the opposite, the end was fast. Thank you to Netgalley and EgmontUSA for the advanced reading copy!
