Toughest Indian in the World
by
Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie's collection of short stories in The Toughest Indian In The World was like a beautifully wrapped gift of precious moments. I laughed, cried and absolutely fell in love with his characters. I read so many outtakes to my husband that he didn't have to read it himself! Buy it. Read it. Share it. You won't be sorry!

Gates Of The Alamo
by
Stephen Harrigan
CattleDogMom
, November 09, 2012
I have to admit, as a "non-Texan", I wasn't sure why - or if - I should care about the events leading up to and during the battle of the Alamo... but Stephen Harrigan has shown me why. Through his exhaustive research and careful placement (only 5) of fictional characters to advance the plot, he made the story of Texas sing! I was left with a much better understanding of the kind of people who brought the state of Texas into existence, and a better idea of why they love it so! This story will stay with me a good, long time.

Icy Sparks
by
Gwyn Hyman Rubio

Perfect for anyone who's felt like the "weirdo"! Icy Sparks is a wonderful tale of a young girl struggling with tics and outbursts that identify her to everyone in her small town as "different" (to those who love her) or "downright evil" (to those who don't). The characters are rich and real and the setting described so beautifully that you can smell the flowers and feel the grass slip through your fingers. The title character takes you along on an emotional journey that reminds you just how boring the world would be if we were all "normal" and how very precious the acceptance of friends and family can be.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
by
Seth Grahame Smith
CattleDogMom
, August 29, 2012
This book was SO much fun! I was very reluctant to read this because, well, it just seemed over-the-top silly. One of my favorite historical icons going after Vampires?? I'm happy to say that Seth Grahame-Smith not only managed to tell a rollicking tale, but he manages - through diligent adherence to the facts of Abraham Lincoln's life - to keep from knocking old Abe off that pedestal I like to keep him on. This story puts you squarely in the middle of Abe Lincoln's life and times and tells a story I would imagine Abe himself would have gotten a kick out of! I'll bet even the academics who served as Lincoln biographers would like this one!

Anthem Of A Reluctant Prophet
by
Joanne Proulx
CattleDogMom
, August 08, 2012
I sincerely hope that Ms. Proulx keeps writing because she has such a wonderful talent for creating rich characters that lift you up and take you along on their journey - if only for a couple-hundred pages. The issues dealt with; God, religion, teen angst, love and loss are tough on any author but Joanne Proulx carries it off like a pro! I was left feeling a kinship with my fellow man and a renewed faith that divine grace is carried within each of our hearts - not behind the walls of a church. Don't let the dark cover art fool you, this book will make you laugh and cry lift your spirits for days after you read the final page!

Already Dead
by
Huston, Charlie
CattleDogMom
, August 01, 2012
I stumbled on Already Dead in a local used book store (sorry Powells - I promise, I'll buy the rest of them here!) and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! It's not literature, it's just a nice, quick, entertaining read. I love that Charlie Huston puts the vampires back in the dark (no mainstreaming here) and I found the explanation for how they and the "shamblers" (zombies) came to be very satisfying. It's quick, it's gritty, it's just plain fun!

Life Expectancy
by
Dean Koontz
CattleDogMom
, June 26, 2012
This is Dean Koontz at his BEST! This delightful tale had me laughing out loud and quoting passages to my husband -- I know... not what you expected to hear about one of the masters of horror, right? This is not your usual horror book, "prepare to be amazed"! The characters - both good guy and bad - are rich, deep, dark, loving and just downright fascinating. The story is unlike any I've read - so entrancing, you completely lose track of time! Buy it. Read it. Then pester your friends and family to read it, just so you'll have someone to talk to about it!!

Mink River
by
Brian Doyle
CattleDogMom
, February 23, 2012
The pace and tone of this novel made you feel as if you were fireside with a wonderfully talented storyteller - you happily follow the ribbon of the tale that Mr. Doyle uncoils, with complete suspension of disbelief. Of course the crow, Moses, speaks English and is a wise fellow at that! No doubt whatsoever that Cedar is able to communicate with the bear - in her language! I found myself in a child-like trance eagerly anticipating the next page, and the next...

Seeking Enlightenment... Hat by Hat: A Skeptic's Path to Religion
by
Nevada Barr
CattleDogMom
, December 30, 2011
I don't consider myself religious and even though I was raised Catholic, I don't consider myself a Christian... but I DO consider myself spiritual and very interested in other's beliefs. Nevada Barr does a wonderful job of taking a sampling of all of the major religions of the world and showing the reader how very much they have in common. This book is a pleasant divergence from the typical fare that insists that their belief system is right and all others wrong. It also serves as a nice reminder of what you like about your religion (whatever that may be), why you cherish your faith, and how easy it really can be to find your way back to God.
