Truly magical! (Pun intended) However, this is not 'Harry Potter' magic - the magic of this book is how it deals with magic in a very no nonsense, 'it just happens' way. The REAL 'magic' is in the storytelling - the characters, the settings, the CIRCUS! One of the most original novels I've read - and I've read a LOT of novels! Easily the best book I read in 2012.

I really enjoyed this book - it was not what I expected, either. It was a fascinating look into the culture of Orthodox Jews in the early 20th century, and a wonderful story of the (perceived) conflict between one's personal passion and one's "duty" toward God. At times it was sad, and other times it was almost infuriating. But it has stuck with me, even after several months. It was also one of the few books to receive 100% thumbs up from our book club!
