The Vegetarian

This engaging book about a young Korean woman is fascinating on many levels. First of all it is never told from her perspective only from those around her who are impacted by her behavior. Secondly her reasons for becoming a vegetarian become more complex as the book progresses until ultimately everyone in her life is impacted. Her family is devastated by her conversion leading to some strange behaviors on their part making you wonder about serious lack of compassion on their part. Thirdly it is a beautifully written novel taking you into a complicated situation and perhaps shedding some light onto the world of mental illness.

Leftovers

A story about a worldwide random disappearance of the population. Called the "Rapture" by some and "Sudden Departure" by others. The author does a good job of looking at the situation from different points of view. At first I thought it would be difficult to read because of the premise of the book but the author goes beyond and takes the reader to the next level. What if this actually happened and how would people react? The results are intriguing.
