Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Hotel New Hampshire

John Irving

Having just finished reading A Prayer for Owen Meany, I needed further art from Mr Irving, I chose The Hotel New Hampshire. The Hotel New Hampshire, like many of Irving’s books, covers a lot of time and family history. The Berry family moves from one failed hotel to another with many grandiose adventures and eccentric characters including a bear, a dwarf (or several), a dog which floats, another bear that is actually a - time to read it for yourself. Not to mention the hive of radicals working on a sympathy bomb to deliver to the Vienna Opera. Oh Irving! A few of the key Berry family members come and go along the way and mostly emotions are left aside while the narration stays true to the bigger picture. There is a wealth of sexual static as found in most Irving stories but it adds to the magic, in an odd kind of way. The reoccurring lines such as "we’re screwed down for life" and "keep passing the open windows" are a nice touch that keeps the reader floating back to previous chapters and characters you met along the adventure, memories of conversations you will wish you too had written down with your loved ones. I only wish this novel had been twice as long. Auf Wiedersehen Hotel New Hampshire.

If This Isnt Nice, What Is?
by
Kurt Vonnegut and Dan Wakefield

Reading this collection of speeches should only take you about an hour, maybe longer if you stop to reread bits out loud to your neighbor, but they are all such a treat. Vonnegut does seem to carry the common thread across all of these speeches, or one of many threads and if you are a fan of his work, you already appreciate counting on that from him. I enjoyed this book, wish there were more speeches included, it is a fast read but well worth your time dear reader. Ting a ling!
