Madness A Bipolar Life
by
Marya Hornbacher
meredycat
, November 14, 2008
Reading Marya Hornbacher's first memoir, Wasted, literally saved my life. At the time I was suffering from a 5 year eating disorder. A year later, I was diagnosed with Bipolar II. When Madness came out I was extremely interested. It's a brilliant look at how mental illness really is and shines light on the extreme euphoria and terror that Bipolar Disorder brings. I strongly recommend it to anyone who knows someone with Bipolar Disorder or struggles with the disease themselves.

This book really brings home the horrific problems with our health care system. As someone with chronic health problems, I could definitely relate. Our health care system in America desperately needs reform.

Almost Moon
by
Alice Sebold

In this novel that deals with an intensely tragic subject (Alzheimer's Disease) Sebold lyrically braids a story with emotion and lovely prose in a dark, gothic story that will move the soul.

This book really opened my eyes about the different ways incest can affect someone. The Kiss is a haunting, touching read.

This one of the first books I read after being diagnosed as Bipolar. It scared the crap out of me, but it also made me feel like I was no longer alone in my struggle.

Serial Killer Letters A Penetrating Look Inside the Minds of Murderers
by
Jennifer Furio
meredycat
, April 15, 2008
I'm halfway through this book, and a bit disappointed. I've been studying serial killers for a few years now, and though some of their letters in this book are enlightening and intriguing, many suspects/convicts beat around the bush and claim not surprisingly, claim to be innocent. However, I would recommend it to those really interested in serial killers.

This book is stomach churning, but in a good way. Although unsettling, it is by far one of my favorite horror books. However, The Exorcist still takes the cake.

Wasted A Memoir Of Anorexia & Bulimia
by
Marya Hornbacher
meredycat
, March 01, 2008
This book single handedly changed my view of bulimia. I had had the disorder for about a year, and was struggling with a seven plus year battle with anorexia when I read it. The authors direct, unapologetic memoir made me aware of how my eating disorder could hurt others, and myself. I highly recommend it!!

Eye Contact

Sure, Eye Contact is no Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, but still, I found this story about a boy with Autism rather moving. I recommend it to anyone in the Special Education field.
