The Light in the Ruins
by
Bohjalian, Chris

Either one of the two closely intertwined stories that make up The Light in the Ruins would have kept me turning the pages, but the combination kept me riveted until 3 am. Impossible to put down this beautifully written World War II (and 11 years later) novel by the always masterful Chris Bohjalian. A whole other perspective on Tuscany and the terrible catch-22 that many Italians found themselves in during World War II.

Sandcastle Girls A Novel

With Bohjahlian's usual talent for making us feel so much apart of of the story we feel we ourselves are telling our own tale, we experience, the Armenian genocide of almost 100 years ago as if it were unfolding right before us-- or more precisely as if we were each the granddaughter uncovering the mysteries of her family.

Navajos Wear Nikes
by
Jim Kristofic
Carol Howe
, January 09, 2013
I loved this book. Kristofic's descriptions of the inner landscape of a young Anglo boy growing up on the Navajo reservation are matched only by his wonderful descriptions of the natural landscape of northern Arizona and the Rez. Initially an outsider, Krisofic soon becomes a young person whose identity is inseparable from, what to others only, may be an exotic place. Our consciousness as readers grows right along side of his as he emerges from adolescence.
