Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Leuchtturm1917 Master Dots Black Journal

My favorite notebook of all time. The dots area unobtrusive for writing or drawing, the paper is a beautiful cream color and the weight of the paper is heavy enough to allow flowing ink on both sides of the page. I love everything about these notebooks and so grateful that Powells carries them here in town.

Thai Street Food

This is a big and beautiful cookbook, the first cookbook in several years that made me want to make everything in it. There are many ingredients, tools and techniques that are new to me and I am not sure if I'll be able to find all of them, but the copy and photography are delicious enough that I am glad I own the book even if I never cook a single recipe from it. I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to cookbooks, but this one really swept me off of my feet. I highly recommend it just for the adventure of traveling Thailand's street food through its pages.

I have been drooling over this book since I first encountered it in Japanese, so when I bumped into it on the shelves at Powell's in an English translation, my heart literally began to race with happiness. While the written instruction does provide some guidance, I expect to spend a lot of time playing with the concepts to create a predictable result. That said, I can't recall a single book or magazine that has so inspired me to sew. The layout and photography are also fantastic and I love how clearly she demonstrates that these ideas are just a foundation for a thousand variations. I highly recommend this book, even if only for daydreaming and better understanding construction.
