Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Adèle & Simon

This book is treat for both the reading parent and the listening child. The story concerns a loving if exasperated older sibling trying to take her brother home from school. At every stop, Simon, the little boy loses something. The art, evoking early 20th century Paris, is gorgeous and even parents will be challenged to find the missing item on each page. There is even a page filled with artists of the era.

Freedom Just Around the Corner: A New American History: 1585-1828
by
Walter a. McDougall
Tripp
, July 10, 2006
This was a great read. McDougall synthesizes wide swathes of American historical research and writes an engaging, reasonably centrist analysis of the first American centuries. It's the sort of book where you learn something new every few pages, which is sadly rare.

Touched with Fire: The Land War in the South Pacific
by
Eric M. Bergerud
Tripp
, June 29, 2006
This is one of the best books about World War 2 that I have ever read. Begerud does an excellent job explaining how the war in the South Pacific was fought and how it differed from the war in Europe. He is also excellent in describing how the Americans, Australians and Japanese dealt with the harsh environment
