Pushing the Limits

Pushing the Limits is absolutely amazing. For one, the cover is awesome. Not only does it draw in readers, it also makes sense with the content of the book. (So yes, there is plenty of kissing.) Katie McGarry did a phenomenal job not only on creating good, realistic characters, but also in making the readers care about them. I cried at least three times while reading this, and I'm pretty sure all of them were during Noah's POV. Noah was a pretty awesome guy. He made some mistakes, and people often misjudged him, but he was a good guy. He cared about his brothers more than anything in the world, and he would do anything to keep them safe. And it was so sweet how he called Echo his siren/nymph/goddess. Echo (I love her name!) was an outsider, and she'd been through a lot. Ever since the incident, people treated her like a freak, and she had a huge hole in her memory. She received a lot of crappy treatment from lots of different people (like her "friends," Luke, her mom, and sometimes even her dad). I think that Noah and Echo are perfect for each other. And it's kind of funny how each of them don't think that they deserve the other. When it came to Echo's memories, there were lots of things that really shocked me, as well as horrify me. The ending was full of hope. It was lovely. It may have been an ending for the readers, but it was a whole new beginning for Noah and Echo :) Hwa Sun :)

My Life Next Door
by
Huntley Fitzpatrick

, August 25, 2012
My Life Next Door is a beautiful, heart-warming romance full of memorable characters :) The characters themselves are what stuck out to me most in this book. Samantha is very likable, and I agreed with or understood most of her decisions throughout the book. She's smart, nice, and respectful. It sucked how badly some of the characters treated her (like her mom, for one). Jase is just as amazing :) He's very thoughtful, hardworking, and kind. His family is full of very interesting people. Plus, Sam and Jase make an adorable couple. As for the plot, it was nice that Sam and Jase took their time to get to know each other, but for the first half of the book, there was no real conflict. The real issues come into play during the second half of the book. And how the conflict was resolved was kind of anti-climatic. I expected some more drama, or more struggle, but there wasn't. It was fixed way too quickly. Still, I loved the characters so much, it easily overrode whatever problems I had with the plot. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading YA contemporary. Vampire Academy: #1
by
Richelle Mead

, August 24, 2012
This book was addicting. I read it in just a few hours, which is unusual for me because I'm a very slow reader (like, average sixth grader reading speed slow). The characters in Vampire Academy were just fantastic. They were all so real because they all had flaws and motivations or intentions behind their actions. Rose, even though she was very funny, could be really cruel and mean sometimes, and it was hard to like her at those moments, but how much she cared for Lissa made it impossible for me to hate her. She always put Lissa's well-being before her own. Likewise, though Lissa could be annoying at parts, everything she was willing to go through for Rose made her very likable. Dimitri was... wow. He's definitely what you'd call swoon-worthy. (Not appearance wise. I don't remember what he's supposed to look like. I just know I didn't like it.) He takes being a guardian very seriously, and that level of dedication is what made him so swoon-worthy for me. As for other characters, most (if not all) of the Moroi annoyed the crap out of me. They were so weak, and dependent on the Dhampir, yet they still considered the Dhampir to be lesser beings. Like, are you freaking kidding me? The narration was really great because it's written in first person from Rose's POV, and I could feel her personality in the writing (like her cockiness). The plot is the only thing in the book that was a bit lacking for me. Rose has a rather short attention span, so it veered off course very often, and while it was interesting, it was a bit frustrating. Overall, Vampire Academy was a great book, and I'm very excited to read the rest of the series :) Hwa Sun :)

Hemlock
by
Kathleen Peacock
Hwa Sun
, August 23, 2012
Hemlock was (for the most part) incredible. My favorite scene in the whole book was the beginning. It's written so fantabulously well. I was scared out of my wits. I seriously think Kathleen Peacock has some major talent for writing scary scenes. Unfortunately, the plot was a bit too predictable. There weren't many things that really surprised me. I guessed who the killer was long before Mac did. So in that aspect, it was kind of disappointing. As for the love interests, that was pretty predictable, too. And the relationship between Mac and Kyle didn't really convince me that they were in love. Most of the time, they were arguing or insulting each other. I get that they've been friends for a while now, so they know each other, but in the reader's perspective, it was hard to believe they liked each other. The book was pretty awesome until the last 100 pages or so. At that point, the story started to lag a bit, and it seemed kind of drawn out. I was actually kind of glad when it was over. The ending, was once again, pretty predictable. I liked the epilogue, though. It opened up the story for a whole other book :) Overall, though Hemlock lacked in some areas, I liked it. Hwa Sun :)

Lorien Legacies 02 Power of Six
by
Pittacus Lore
Hwa Sun
, August 22, 2012
Unlike the first book, this one altered points of view between John and Marina (Number Seven). I find it a bit irritating when a book is written like that, not because I get confused or anything, but because then I have to jump around. For example, if I'm reading John's P.O.V., and it's getting to a really good part, it suddenly changes to Marina. Then I have to read another chapter or two, and repeat the cycle. But I still loved this book. Personally, I think that this one was better than I am Number Four. The main reason is because I liked the writing better. It's also because Six is one of the main characters. I think Six is so much better than Sarah. I liked Sarah, but Six is so much more awesome. Seriously, Six kicks butt. (I hope Six ends up with Four!) And *spoiler* Six doesn't betray Four. *end of spoiler* The plot was good, too. There were somethings that I thought was a bit deja vu with the first book, but it was different enough so that I could still like it. There were a lot of twists, and some foreshadowing, too. Plus, there's even more action then there was in the first one. The ending was a bit iffy. It just cut off, with no closure. But since there's going to be anther book, I guess it doesn't really matter. Hwa Sun :)

Sweet 01 Sweet Evil
by
Wendy Higgins
Hwa Sun
, August 21, 2012
Sweet Evil was as fantastic as I hoped it'd be :) First order of business (I need to get the fan girling out of the way first): KAIDEN. He's so... I can't even put him into words, because no matter what I say, it's not going to justify him. Just know: he's hella-mazing. Moving on... I liked the new perspective on Nephilims. The nephilims are all sons and daughters of fallen angels, and their purpose is to "work" for their fathers, as in influence others to do bad things. I thought it was cool how Anna was from GA, since I lived there for five years. And my family went on a road trip when moving to WA, so I rode in a car from GA to CA, too. One of the things I liked the most about this book was that it was heavily focused on the relationship between Anna and Kaiden. For example, there's the road trip Anna and Kaiden took. During that time, they got to know each other better, while the reader got to know more about Nephilims (not to mention Kai, too). Sometimes, I felt like the two were just going in circles (especially after the road trip), but overall, I found it entertaining to read about their relationship. The main weak point of Sweet Evil was its plot because there was no complexity to it. Since it's part of a trilogy, as I started getting closer to finishing the book, I kept expecting a big conflict to reveal itself, but there was no "bigger picture." Even so, I enjoyed the other aspects of the book too much to down grade its rating. I think Sweet Evil is a definite must read for all YA Paranormal Romance fans. I really hope that there will be some news about the sequel soon, because I hate waiting for books, and I really want to know what will happen next! Hwa Sun :)

Revenants 02 Until I Die
by
Amy Plum
Hwa Sun
, August 18, 2012
Kate and Vincent are one of the most adorable couples ever! X) I couldn't help, but smile at their adorable-ness. Kate was sometimes a bit annoying, because she spoiled the mood often by bringing up revenant related stuff. I get that she wants to know more about her boyfriend's kindred, but did she always have to be such a party pooper? Other than that, though, she was still pretty awesome. And Vincent... Oh, dear. He's "handsome, chivalrous, and witty." (I'm quoting the jacket flap.) He's such a gentleman to Kate, it's incredibly sweet. A lot of the characters had at least one Drama Queen/King moment. By Drama Q/K moment, I mean that they overreacted big time on something that didn't seem that important. As for the plot, I think a bit more complexity would have been nice, but it was overall interesting enough to keep me reading. The numa are very underground for most of the time in this book, so you don't get to see much of them, and therefore, there's not much action. But, in the scenes that did have action, it was incredible. Kate was so bad-(fill in the blank, guys, because I'm not going to say that word). And the ending! WHY?!?!?! It was like the ending for City of Fallen Angels ALL OVER AGAIN! Poor Kate and Vincent.... Until I Die was an amazing read, especially because I got to go back into the world of revenants. I seriously can't wait for the next (and last) book in the series, If I Should Die. Hwa Sun :)

Beautiful Disaster
by
McGuire, Jamie
Hwa Sun
, August 16, 2012
Le sigh. So disappointing :( After reading the synopsis for Beautiful Disaster, I just had to read the book. It seemed so promising. But, sadly, it didn't live up to its promises. Let me explain why... First of all, this book is over 400 pages long. So imagine that in the first 200 pages, they meet, slowly fall in love, go through some rough patches, and finally get together. Now, imagine that in the second half of the book, they break up and go through those stages all over again. Well, yeah, that's pretty much what happened. The first time, it was okay, but during the second time, it was just "COME ON! We've been through this already!" Also, the pacing was way off. At some parts, it felt super sloooow, and at others it felt super rushed. There were very few places where the pacing seemed just right. Now (oh, gosh) the characters. I'm just going to give you a list of problems I had with them, okay? Most of them were so moody, especially Abby. They were hardly ever stable with their emotions. One moment they were furious, and the next they were all lovey dovey. This made the characters seem really unrealistic for me. Abby's back story seemed so completely fake. She seemed barely damaged by her past, which made her (again) unrealistic because it's hard to believe that someone who was raised like that escaped almost completely unaffected. Travis, (sigh) boy does he have some major issues. He's the King of Jealousy, Overreacting, Anger, and Beating People Up. Not good. The names... really? America? Shepley? Finch? Brazil? I'm not saying that I have anything against people with these names (because I don't). It's just the fact that there are so many people with such unusual names who all know each other that contributes into making the story unbelievable. So, basically, most of them were unstable and unrealistic. Travis and Abby could be extremely irritating at times. They did have their sweet moments, though, where they were getting along and I wasn't annoyed at one (or both) of them. There were a few characters that I really liked, like America (Abby was so lucky to have her as her best friend.), Finch (Ha ha, he's awesome.), and Shepley (He's awesome, too.). Oh, and there's part of the book that's set in Las Vegas which sucked. Abby's reactions to everything was just so ugh. That was one of my least favorite parts of the book. The writing was eh for me. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't horrible either. And lastly, the ending was so incredibly sweet, but at the same time, so immensely stupid. That's all I have to say about this book. Give it a go if you want. Maybe you'll enjoy it much more than I did. Hwa Sun :) P.S. I don't get the cover. It's pretty, but what does it have to with the book? Can someone explain it to me?

Wings 04 Destined
by
Aprilynne Pike
Hwa Sun
, August 14, 2012
*Okay, before anything else, I just really have to say this. I love the name Aprilynne. Seriously. I think that it's absolutely gorgeous.* It's official. My mind has been blown. No, like seriously. I can't even think straight right now. Okay, let me take a second to calm my thoughts. Phew. Better. This book takes place in a span of less than 48 hours (without counting the ending), starting off a few hours after where it left off in Illusions. I found it really annoying at the time how she just cut off at the end of Illusions, but now I kind of get why she did that. Anyways, because all the events happen in under 48 hours, there's tons of detail. The story was very skillfully plotted. I was amazed at how smoothly one event led to the next one, and the next one, and the next one after that... Also, there was so much action. SO MUCH. And things kept getting from bad to worse, so I kept thinking, "How are they going to get out of this mess?" But they managed (sort of). There were many twists and turns (well, duh, it is a war). I was hooked. I had to force myself to lay the book down, so that I could go to sleep. And lastly, that perfect, brilliant, glorious ending. Well, actually there's two endings. One is for people who need a happy ending for every story, and one is for people who need to know the full story. I read the "The Last Words." And I was satisfied with the end. (I won't say anything more because I don't want to spoil it.) But really, if you don't like it when books don't have a happy ending, DON'T read it. Before it, she even wrote a warning for those people, so they won't be disappointed. The best thing about this whole series, in my opinion, is that with each book, you can see Aprilynne Pike improve as a writer. It gets better and better with each book, and Destined is definitely my favorite of them. Wow. I am just bursting with compliments. TO ALL WINGS FANS: You are going to love it! You may have waited a super long time for its release, but it's worth it. I had big (and I mean BIG) expectations for Destined. And you know what? It went way beyond them. Hwa Sun :) P.S. Team Tamani all the way! WOO HOO!

City of Fallen Angels
by
Cassandra Clare
Hwa Sun
, August 13, 2012
I didn't have very high expectations for City of Fallen Angels, but it managed to let me down anyways. I've been putting off reading this for a while now because I wasn't sure whether I'd like it as much as the original first three books in the series. The main reason I did eventually read this book was for Jace and Clary (well, more Jace than Clary) which is why I didn't like that it had alternating POVs (mostly) between Simon and Clary. Actually, it had a lot more Simon than Clary. This was an issue for me because Simon is a pretty cool guy and all that, but I don't really care about him, not enough to I care about what he's thinking. Most of the book was told from Simon's POV. It focused so much on what Simon was doing and thinking, it almost felt like Jace and Clary were just secondary characters, which sucked because, as mentioned above, I read it mainly for Jace and Clary (again, more Jace than Clary). And there was nothing in the plot that really surprised me. Maybe it's because the surprises couldn't possibly top all the ones in the previous books, but the plot was felt kind of slow. There were some parts that seemed to barely drag along. The one thing City of Fallen Angels did succeed in doing was making sure I read the next book. With that kind of ending there is no way I won't read it because, again, Jace is my favorite character, and I refuse to leave him like that. Hwa Sun :)

Onyx: A Lux Novel
by
Jennifer L. Armentrout
Hwa Sun
, August 12, 2012
Where do I friggin' begin... I think I liked Onyx better than Obsidian (just a little bit). You're probably thinking that I must be crazy, because what could possibly top the awesome-ness of Obsidian? Well, apparently Onyx can. First of all, there was a whole lot more action and alien mojo going on in this book. There were also some major turns and twists that I absolutely loved. And Daemon. GOSH. Believe it or not, he was even hotter. Especially because he was actually kind and thoughtful. There were a few scenes when I was kind of wary of him, and let's just say that Daemon+Jealousy=Not good. Not good at all. For most of the book, I thought Onyx was about the same with Obsidian, but that changed as I started getting closer to finishing it. The last 60 or so pages were pure epicness. There was action, romance, even some drama, and a little bit of humor. But above all that, there were some rather painful, heartbreaking emotions. I even cried a bit. I won't say anymore than that because it'd be awfully cruel of me to spoil the book for you. All in all, Onyx was everything I wanted and more. I'm not sure I can survive the next few months until Opal releases. (Thank goodness it's only 5 months.) Hwa Sun :)

Lunar Chronicles 01 Cinder
by
Marissa Meyer
Hwa Sun
, August 11, 2012
Cinder is a fascinating retelling of Cinderella with a delightful sci-fi twist. First of all, this world that Marissa Meyer has created is simply brilliant. She's a freaking genius. As for the characters, Cinder was awesome. She's smart and level headed, both of which are always good traits to have. She's not afraid to use force if it comes down to it, knows how to be sarcastic, and has a personality that I can easily relate to. I think Prince Kai was amazing, too. I loved his snarky side because it was funny, and he could actually control it and not take his anger out on everyone. He had the ability to keep it mostly to himself, which I very much appreciated. Now, about the plot: the first 150 pages or so were slow. Nothing big happened, and there were only two reasons why I kept reading through it. One was that I kept hoping that something would happen soon, and the second reason was because the world building was so fantastic, it drew me in and wouldn't let go. I wanted to know more about the world. When the plot finally began to unfold, I was reeled in even further. The last hundred pages practically flew by. I'll admit, the plot was rather predictable, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. The ending was one that I liked very much. It wasn't a cliffhanger, which was good. It closed off this book, while at the same time, it opened up for the sequel. I thoroughly enjoyed Cinder, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the series bring. Hwa Sun :)

Gallagher Girls 05 Out of Sight Out of Time
by
Ally Carter

I loved this book. I love Ally Carter, and I think she's really awesome. I had big expectations for this book, since I've been waiting for it ever since I finished the fourth one during spring break last year, and really, my expectations were met beautifully. One of my favorite things about the book is how she makes funny comments in totally serious situations. It might not even be funny for other people, but I laugh at pretty much anything, so I was cracking up. And I know this might sound a little weird, but I love it when Zach points at himself and says, "Spy." I just think that's really cool. Don't know why. But he only did it once in this boo :( Yeah... I was counting. There's a lot of action in this one, which I enjoyed. Also, Out of Time, Out of Sight has a much darker feeling to it, but I'm not really sure how I feel about it. She doesn't know what happened, and she's changed a lot during the summer (both mentally and physically). That gives it a really mysterious-feel to the book. Unfortunately, the book had its flaws, too. There were parts in the book that I was really confused about, and took me a while to figure out. And it wasn't really clear whether Cammie regained all of her memory, or just that portion of it. So, overall, I think Out of Sight, Out of Time is an awesome book :) Hwa Sun :)

Revenants 01 Die for Me
by
Amy Plum
Hwa Sun
, August 08, 2012
This book reminded me of Twilight, except that I liked it a lot better (this is the second review that I've said that, and I would change it, except it's true). Die for Me is set in Paris, which made it so much cooler. I have never been one of those people who are like, "I MUST GO TO PARIS ONE DAY!" Sure, I would have gone if I had gotten a chance to, but it wasn't really on my list of top 10 places I must visit. Now, after reading this book, I seriously want to go there. It made it sound so magical. *Daydreaming* I really liked that Amy Plum used revenants: part ghost, part zombie (sort of). It's kind of creepy how they go dormant every few weeks, but it's so different from the usual vampire and werewolves thing. I loved it. And OMG... Vincent. Can you say hot? And he has manners (Bonus!). He's seriously a gentleman. But, even with all the good points, there were a few bad ones, too. For one, there were way too many cliches. I'm not a complete hater of cliches, but I definitely think that a bit more originality could have made this book even better. Plus, I wasn't a big fan of the writing either. But the ending was so darn romantic. It would have been perfect, if it wasn't for the funny dialogue. The dialogue was fine for the rest of the book, but at the end, it was just blegh. It made Kate seem so out of character. Overall, though, Die for Me was an amazing book. Hwa Sun :)

Divergent 01
by
Veronica Roth
Hwa Sun
, August 07, 2012
I read this book because of all the Insurgent-craze going on. And, boy, am I glad I read it. I love Tris' personality. I admire her determination, her intelligence, and her willingness to appear strong (even when she feels like crying), her ability to remain (or at least appear) calm, and a bunch of other stuff. I felt a swarm of emotions while reading Divergent. I didn't start crying, but my eyes got watery a lot. I also got really angry at some parts (like whenever Eric was mentioned), and sometimes, I was terrified at what happened (like with the incident including Rita's sister). Not to mention that I was giggling hysterically at some parts. Like the fear-of-intimacy thing. That was so funny! I kept wondering about what the leaders would have been thinking. (Hahaha!!!) Four is so butt-kicking-awesome. Seriously. He's moody, and really romantic when he wants to be. He treated Tris so coldly sometimes, though, I wanted to punch him. But they make a cute couple. Four and Six (hahaha! It's like The Power of Six). Except I wish that they had talked more, and gotten to know more about each other in the beginning. The only reason why I didn't give this book a 5-star rating is because I felt like something was missing. I can't describe what it is. I just feel like there is something that should be there, but isn't. (Yeah, that made no sense.) It's the same feeling I had for The Hunger Games. So, back to the point. Divergent was fun to read, so if you like reading dystopian novels, I totally think you should read it. Hwa Sun :)

I'm going to keep this short, since most of you will probably read the book. 1. Veronica Roth is an amazing writer! From the characters, to the plot, to the dialogue--mind blowing. 2. Insurgent was definitely better than Divergent. With this book, I didn't get that weird feeling that something was missing. 3. I feel sad because I'm going to have to wait over a year for the next book (or, as its been nicknamed, Detergent). 4. Jack Kang (the Candor leader) has the same last name as me! :D There. That's it. Go read it. Hwa Sun :)

Slide

Jill Hathaway

It's been quite a while since I've read a murder mystery book. And Slide made me wonder why I ever stopped reading that genre. First of all, I loved the idea behind the book. Vee (the main character) had the ability to "slide" into other people's mind while she was unconscious. Add the fact that she witnessed a murder while sliding, and BAM. You've got Slide. There were times when I became so engrossed into the book, I almost felt like I was there with Vee, trying to solve this mystery. Also, the characters were WOW. There were characters that I adored, hated with a passion, cared for and sympathized with, etc... It made them all seem very real to me. The only reason why I didn't give this book a 5 star rating is because Vee was really frustrating to read about sometimes. She was so freaking slow to come to a conclusion. She would only realize something once it was too late. The second reason why I thought she was so frustrating was because she was way too careless. She knew that touching something that a person left an emotional imprint on would make her slide, but she touched their stuff anyways. If I was her, I would have been (at the least) wearing gloves 24/7. Anyways, I think that Jill Hathaway really does have a talent for mystery. She left me guessing until near the very end. She was also amazing at building up tension. Hwa Sun :)
