Black Candle Poems about Women from India Pakistan & Bangladesh

Chitra Divakaruni

I have been joyously reading the poetry collections of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and I am simply blown away. Her poetry is so refreshing and wonderfully enriching to the landscape of poetry written on American soil. Because I was born and raised in a foreign country and because I am also from California, I can also see how important her poetry is to a nation has such a diverse mix of ethnicities and nationalities. Her poems are truly timeless renditions of the realities of Indians in their native land and Indian immigrants--realities shared by so many other individuals in our rapidly globalizing world. I highly recommend this poetry collection, for anyone with a passion for poetry and a passion for understanding the cultural traditions of the world. I especially appreciate that her poems are honest; Divakaruni does not seek to romanticize certain cultural practices, and she narratives in a voice that is not overly sentimental or full of sensationalism. She is careful not to humiliate or judge or condemn, but she is also confident in her critique and questioning of what is often done to women (perhaps even done by women) of Indian origin. Her poems urge us to be more considerate in the way we live, to recognize the humanity of all people, to put this humanity first before religion/culture/power. I hail her for her strong voice and bold heart!

I am a poet and, to my great delight, recently discovered Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's poetry collections! What an incredible and insightful poet! Though her poetry deals mainly with India/South Asia and with women's experiences in that part of the world, I can relate to her poems, and I understand them. This is because her images and storytelling are crystalline, not abstract or obscure. Her poems are accessible even as they are profound and moving. Her poems cross many borders, sharing what always feels like an intimate insider's view of life for Indians on the subcontinent and Indians abroad, facing monumental life transitions--often with great courage and restraint, and sometimes with great rebelliousness. These transitions are often the stuff of women's lives, women who must move between families, between men's hands, and between strange lands. As a woman, I appreciate Chitra Divakaruni's poems because they make me feel that women and their stories are not invisible but are richly multi-colored and worthy of great art!
