Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Equal of the Sun A Novel
by

Fifteenth century Iranian shahs? Eunuchs? Really? Yes, really. This novel will wrap you so tightly in that world that you will forget all about your iPad and big screen TV and think you are there in the dazzling marketplace with them. Loosely based on the life of a strong-willed woman fighting for political power against her brothers destined for the throne. Anita Amirrezvani has written a brilliant second novel, to follow her equally captivating first book, The Blood of Flowers.

Flamethrowers

I've only read the portion that Amazon lets you read. The Flamethrowers is written in the voice of a young woman relentlessly pushing forward. Not only is she traveling across the U.S., she meets a man named Speed just as she prepares to race on the salt flats on her motorcycle. The book is written in very close first-person narration, with mostly paraphrased quotations, making it a bit thick to read at times.
