Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Canada
by
Richard Ford

Dell Parsons, the narrator of Ford's Canada, is at the center of a classic coming-of-age story, a rite-of-of passage, the tale of the hero's quest, battling through good and evil, seeking an answer and some kind of truth. Dell is an unwitting hero, but he uses his eyes and ears to survive in the situation adults throw him into. Like Odysseus, he negotiates and bargains, and finally leaves for better shores. Ford tells his tale through the voice of a boy on the brink of manhood thrown into chaos by misguided parents. He is taken to Canada to strangers and journeys through hell before he is rescued by kindness. It is an old old story that will continue as long as humanity.

Lone Wolf
by
Jodi Picoult
BestWordforYou
, July 27, 2012
Picoult's Lone Wolf successfully weaves together the complex fascinating life of wolf packs; a father's obsession with wolves, leading him to live with and study them, thus shortchanging his family; the effects of brain trauma, physically and emotionally, from a truck accident with his young daughter; her obsessive love for him; and the family's disintegration after divorce. The decision whether to withdraw life support and the unraveling of what really happened in the accident, and suggested spiritual connections between wolves and humans, form an informative, yet touching story.
