Emma

This title is considered by some to be Ms. Austen's best novel--and understandably so. Although Emma Woodhouse is a flawed character she is kind, generous, well-meaning, and is tireless in her care of her fussy father. I find Emma to be a fascinating and complex heroine. Treat yourself to a reading--or a re-reading--of this timeless classic. (The last 100 pages or so contain a variety of essays about the book and the author that add an extra dimension for those who want to delve more deeply into the book.)

Have you always meant to read James Joyce's "Ulysses?" Have you started "Ulysses and given up in confusion and frustration? As Bloomsday approaches (June 16), you can actually enjoying reading "Ulysses" with the help of this book of extensive annotations. (Note that this book does not contain the text of "Ulysses") These "Notes" are clear, easily understood and cover every word or passage in the novel that you could wish. The authors must have done phenomenal research to come up with this excellent accompaniment to "Ulysses." Indispensable!

Green Road
by
Anne Enright

, May 31, 2015
Another winning novel from the prize-winning Irish author Anne Enright. "The Green Road" was awarded the Man Booker Prize for 2015 and tells the saga of the Madigan family from Co. Clare. Rosaleen is the matriarch who takes to her bed in the "horizontal solution" in a crisis. Over the years, the four siblings try unsuccessfully to please her. When Rosaleen announces her plans to sell the family home, the brothers and sisters decide to come together as a family to celebrate one last Christmas together in their home. Vivid writing--a funny and sad book that is richly deserving of the awards garnered.
