Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Wolves of Mercy Falls 01 Shiver

Shiver is a thrilling love story about a girl named grace who falls in love with a boy named Sam. They love each other and everything is perfect except, Sam is no ordinary boy. He is a wolf. He lives with a pack of other wolves and can transform into a human when the weather gets warm. Sam knows that this is the last year he will be able to change into a human. Grace must fight to keep him human because she knows that if he changes he is never going to come back. I really enjoyed reading Shiver because it has such descriptive writing that you can almost feel the cold and smell the crisp leaves. I would recommend this book to girls mostly who like magic, love, and suspense. This book changes from Sam’s perspective to Grace's every couple of chapters. I really liked this because you could see the world through both of their eyes. I also think that people who liked Twilight would like this book a lot because there are some similarities to them. I really loved reading this book and I hope you love it as much as I did.

Matilda Bone

I did not enjoy this book. It was a slow read. I didn't love the charioteers. I didn't really learn much. It was hard to keep reading. I read this as a book group book. I would say if you wanted to do this as a book group book it brings up OK discussion. This is a story about a girl named Matilda who goes to stay at a bone setters while her priest is away. She meets many people and does many treatments. She finds a different side of herself. She complains a lot.
