Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Verily, A New Hope: Star Wars: William Shakespeare's Star Wars 4

You’re not reading this book for the story. You know the story. If you’re picking up this book, you’ve seen movie " movies " more times than you can count. You’re reading this book for the execution. And let me tell you " the execution is hilaaarious. Now you might be a little leery, what with George Lucas’ undo preference for a ‘revised’ Star Wars coupled with his tight control over the copyright of the franchise, and fear that not even the language of Shakespeare can make worth entering into that whole mess again, and that’s understandable.

A satisfying end to a fantastic series. I'm not sure how much to say about this book. If you haven't read the first two set in this world, go start them! If you've read them, try to wait patiently for this final book. It's funny, terrifying, witty, heartbreaking, and hopeful. It's a great new Margaret Atwood novel.

Shaman reconciles the present with the past, creates a connection between our descendants and ourselves. All you have to do is put yourself in Loon's place. Try to vividly imagine his all-consuming misery, and the equally consuming moments of small pleasures. Feel the cold on your flesh, the thud of your spear in the flank of a bison.

With David Foster Wallace, strangely enough. I found this book in college while doing research for a paper, and instantly fell into it. I think that eventually an ex stole my copy. That's why you should never fall in love.
