Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Jane Kelly is one tough cookie! It was really great reading a local author and knowing the landmarks she was describing. Fun and entertaining read!

Excellent book. I am not a fan of her more popular series, but this one was a fun easy read.

Go Go Girls Of The Apocalypse
by
Victor Gischler

I bought this book for the mere fact the review on the front related it to a Quentin Tarantino film and a Christopher Moore book. Boy were they right! In a post-apocalyptic world Mortimer wonders down from his 9 year refuge and finds all that he had known in ruins and the new America founded around Joey Armageddons. Who knew that the few things that would remain a mainstay after the apocalypse were alcohol and naked women! Mortimer's time is spent finding his way out of unimaginable situations (Mort ends up naked and tied up more times then I can count!). With the help of a post-apocalyptic cowboy named Bill, they are off to rid America of Joey Armageddon's rival, but things don't turn out as expected. Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse is a fast paced fun filled book. I had a hard time pacing myself and not reading it all in one sitting. Your time and money will be well spent on this one!

Breathers: A Zombie's Lament
by
S G Browne

"If you've never been staked down on the side of a hill and left out to rot at a research facility for human decay, then you probably wouldn't understand." "If you've never seen someone get his arm torn out of his socket by a gang of drunk college frat boys who slapped in the face with his own hand, then you probably wouldn't understand" These are just a few quotes from "Breathers, a zombies lament" by S.G. Browne. It is beyond hilarious. It's a world where zombies have been around since before the depression area and Breathers, their name for the living, having been pelting them with food products and using them for such things as crash test dummies since then. One of the funniest aspects of the books is that animal control is responsible for taking them in. They get put in cages like dogs and if they aren't 'claimed' after 72 hours it's off to a research facility or body farm or worse. Highly entertaining and funny!

One for the Money: Stephanie Plum 1
by
Janet Evanovich

First in a series of 14 books, this book introduces us to Stephanie Plum; Half Italian, Half Hungarian, all New Jersey! The series has loveable and hilarious returning characters such as the hunky on again, off again boyfriend Joe Morelli and Stephanie's Grandma Mazur. The world of bounty hunting is never boring and Stephanie is always getting herself in to trouble. I find myself laughing out loud when reading these books, and recommend them if you are looking for an easy and entertaining read!
