Deep Work Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World
by
Cal Newport
Nancy Thompson
, October 11, 2017
In this era of massive amounts of information and distractions filling each day, it is a challenge to create the time to do creative, thoughtful work. This book is a great "cookbook" for how to demand that time in one's life. He discusses ways to find the time and the amazing benefits for doing so. I liked that he offered many choices for how to do this. He fills out what could be a rather dry narrative with stories that illustrate the value of taking the time to move out and away for the madding crowd and identify yourself as a unique, creative and talented individual.

The Painter
by
Peter Heller

An unusual story of a man who is driven both by his violent rage and by his need to express himself on canvas. He has served time in prison as a result of his anger and is now running for his life after it surfaced again. As both the people committed to killing him and the authorities close in he is driven to paint what is in his mind and heart. Unfortunately this need may lead to his next incarceration as the pictures themselves reveal what he has seen and done. As a former painter myself, I was fascinated by how intense his need to express himself became. I just wish he were real and I could see the his work in real life. A gripping story with great twists.

The Illumination
by
Kevin Brockmeier
Nancy Thompson
, April 26, 2017
I love authors who create something completely new. Brockmeier finds a truly unique way to express the wounds, the shame and the pain that individuals feel. On a specific day and time light begins to radiate out of people all over the world, through their physical injuries and though their emotional pain. Doctors can just look at patients and see where the illness or injury is in the body. He connects his characters and their personal injuries and hurts through the travels of a book of love letters that moves from stranger to stranger. It is a frightening and “illuminating” for these people especially those who have hidden their pain. Brockmeier’s writing is rich, graceful and compassionate. I highly recommend Illumination.

Tibetan Peach Pie
by
Tom Robbins
Nancy Thompson
, April 26, 2017
After reading nearly all of Tom Robbins’ books over the many years, I have wondered where he could possibly have come up with the weird and wonderful premises. Tibetan Peach Pie is a window into where and how he became who and what he is. It is a wonderful trip back to the amazing 60’s and the people who participated in and helped create that world changing time. He knew a lot of really cool people. As a life-time resident of the Northwest, it was also fun and moving to re-visit the way that Seattle was in that decade.

Delicious writing, a soft, delicate story and easily visualized places and people that tend to live with you long after the book is closed and put away on the shelf.
