Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Jelly's Blues: The Life, Music, and Redemption of Jelly Roll Morton

This is a terrific biography about the self proclaimed "inventor of jazz". It reads like a novel as it follows Jelly Roll Morton's travels from East to West, from prime time to scraping by. As an accompanying musical side dish check out the library of congress CD (interview and piano playing) with Folklorist Alan Lomax.

Penguin Book Of American Folk Songs
by
Alan Lomax

I'm at this moment looking at an old 1964 first edition that I bought new when I first started playing guitar. It's an archetype of american folk music. Unfortunately it's been all over the country with me and is pretty beat, missing pages. I thought I could copy pages from Folk Song USA, Lomax and Seeger, but it doesn't sync correctly with all the songs. I'm happy to have had the idea to check out Powell online and wow!--a copy available for a reasonable price. The price on my original was $1.95, but that was over 40 years ago and $10.95 seems like a reasonable price now, in 2013. This will be a great gift for myself. It's extensive and includes piano parts as well as guitar, and historical background of songs. I really didn't think I would find this fantastic music book. I'm looking forward to receiving it with great participation.
