Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find — And Keep — Love

Attached is one of those classic books about psychological research that makes my work as a Couples Therapist so much easier. Most of my clients are deeply grateful to have read it, experiencing an “aha” revelation about why certain relationships are so difficult. Two researchers from Columbia applied the seminal work on attachment in toddlers done by John Bowlby to couples. The result is a concise description of secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment styles, and how they interact. Written for the lay reader, it is very accessible, and should be required reading for those dating, or experiencing a roller-coaster of emotions in a relationship.

The School of Essential Ingredients

If you are a literary, Northwest foodie, this is your book. The prose is literally, delicious, filled with images that evoke the desire to start playing in your kitchen. And while it is a series of love stories, they are crisp and edgy, and fiercely authentic. The author’s vignettes of participants in the cooking class at a food lovers’ restaurant span the age range, exploring the diversity of human experience, learning about love and life through the delectable medium of food.
