Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Book with No Pictures

Blork. Bluurf. B. J. Novak's children's book has no pictures but is still a hit with the younger set. Instead of relying on plot and captivating illustrations to keep the reader interested, this is more of a read-aloud trick. Novak explains that when read aloud, the reader must say what's written exactly on the page, and that's where the fun begins. An especially good bedtime story when it's your spouse's turn to read. Our house was filled with giggles.

Warning to victims of violence: the main character recounts violent acts to her and we witness new acts of violence with additional victims. I can only imagine that those who have been in a similar situation might want to be aware of this before reading. This was my first Nora Roberts novel and I got what I was expecting: hunky guy, ripping off of clothes, emotional tension. I was surprised at the foul language, but as stated, this was my first and maybe that's common in this genre. Follows the standard romance plot, through the lens of dog training and search and rescue, which added an interesting twist to the domestication of two individuals becoming a couple. Overall: fun romp- enjoy!
